Was the mother a diabetic?

Diabetics typically have larger babies.

I am guessing the birth mom was a tad obese as part of/result of/ prior to her pregnancy. Just sayin’.

Also I bet this baby loses a lot of fluid weight in its first few days and then progresses normally.

24 inches is a long baby, and 16 pounds is a whopper.

I wish them the best.

And a better lifelong diet.

It said she got gestational diabetes, so apparently that counts.

Otherwise, if a baby goes on too long in gestation (either misjudged age or waiting for natural labor to start, like mine), it can get bigger than would be expected for normal 40-wk period.
