More stores across the U.S. that offer deeply-discounted products are seeing their sales decline after years of growth amid America’s “Great Recession” — and one analyst said on Monday it’s another sign of even deeper downturn.

SNIP

“I think what’s going on in those stores is that we are in a depression for 80 percent of Americans,”

SNIP

“In other words, the economy is continuing to be worse, the Obama depression continues to explode,” he added.

We had a Murphy’s and Niesner’s, both dime stores. Had cheap candy that we would buy, then sneak it into the 25 cent movie next door in Miami.

I keep wondering, will the DNC throw zero under the bus at some point. Has it started? Or are LSM starting to experience fits of sanity?

WSJ was the originator of this piece.

It’s a very telling indicator, I believe, unclouded by government corrections and obfuscations.

People aren’t moving up from dollar stores back to WM and Target.

They’re actually spending less than two yrs ago.

I am not sure that it is that people cannot afford it, but there is little to buy of value in those stores. The food is junk, the stuff is cheap, and I imagine that people are holding their dollars for more durable goods.

Is this story a sign the MSM has finally dropped the Blame Bush theme?

Yup. The 5 and dime store.

I remember my mom calling them the 5 and dime store.

“This could be a business opportunity: 50 cent stores!”

The real problem with dollar stores is inflation. In 3 years they’re gonna all have to rename themselves “$5 Stores”.

I don’t think it’s bunk either...I just took the contrarian position looking for the response I got. I agree with the response.

*************************************************
There is plenty of value in those stores ,,, the 3L soda’s for $1 are made by Cott , a bottler that makes BETTER soda than Coke ,, they have hair color that works well , shampoo , name brand toothpaste , generic knockoffs of quality toothbrushes, 3q bleach, dish soap , soft scrub for glass-top ranges and much more ..

I was at one today , bought an 18 oz. bottle of flouride rinse and a 4 pack of high quality squirt guns for the kids..

******************************************************
They’ve already cut quantities by 10-25% on most items ,, at some point you don’t really want a smaller bottle of an item... I predict we’ll see a name change to something like “$1 and up” stores or a name with no price ,, remember the old “value merchant” corp that ran “everything’s a dollar” stores ,, I think “Value Merchants” would be a great store name.

Back when I saw the economy heading south, I thought about investing in stocks in a few publically traded dollar stores. Sounded like a good idea.

I was busy, broke or whatever. So I didn’t.

Anyone that knows me will tell you I can crater any company or investment opportunity if I lay hands on it. If I buy one stock...the compamy is doomed. It’s just the way it is.

I am so happy I don’t feel any guilt. Not my fault!!

If you would like future protections for your investment options...for a nominal fee, I will stay away from these companies. Just e-mail me a at www. berdie@blahblahblah.

On a serious note, I miss the 5 & Dimes that died with Walmart and the dollar stores.

” “the dime store”. “

aka the "five and ten store"

Boy, it’s been decades since I’ve heard that one.....

Another formerly common expression you rarely hear anymore is "it's a free country"...

I blame coupon clippers.

Why? I've used coupons at both Family Dollar and Dollar General stores. Those coupons are just like money to those stores.

I was absolutely stunned to see the term “Obama Depression” spill from the headline and text of this story. Some folks at CBS are going to have their heads handed to them for dissing “The Won.”

Define, “come up with”, if it means raising 2000 without borrowing or selling some prized possession I doubt that anywhere near fifty percent can do it. If it means rake, scrape, borrow, steal or come up with it by any means possible then maybe it is different. Even at that a lot of people wouldn’t have a chance.

I know where the money is, if a person has a decent sized lot on a high traffic motorway all you need to do is advertise that space can be rented per day for anyone who wants to hold a yard sale.

Where I live we have such a place, extremely high traffic volumn with plenty of parking and people come there 7 days a week to set up anything for sale, almost but not quite a flea market.

Some people are even advertising that they will pick up stuff from a persons home and then hold an off the highway yard sale for a commission or percentage of the sales.

Americana are not stupid, and when the times get tough people get creative.

And yet we will still give Obama the finger.
