Minnesota shutdown stirs debate over who gets paid

As the shutdown entered its second full week Monday, with no end in sight, politicians and public employees traded accusations over who's getting paid, who isn't and why. "None of them should be getting paid," said Mike Lindholt, a Department of Transportation maintenance worker idled by the shutdown. "If you don't do your job, you don't get paid. That's how it is for most people." The political leaders whose budget dispute caused the shutdown are still entitled to collect their pay, and more than half of them are. Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton and the Republican Senate majority leader have both declined their checks, as have some rank-and-file lawmakers of both parties. But many others are still collecting checks, including the Republican House speaker.

Hey poor little Mikey, the legislature did they're job,but Marx Dayton didn't like how they did it.

The back pay issue depends on which union and which contract...they're NOT easy (or often even possible) to find on-line. (why , I don't know-the taxpaying public should be able to easily look it up)

you have to take the word of some leftist writing for the WaPo,AP, or NY Times as to what their contract(s) state .

I would appreciate the opportunity to read the Governor’s proposals in detail, but to my knowledge, he has never offered one. That means that he is the governor of “No.”

In the debates to get elected, he stated that he would not shut down the government just to get a tax increase.

I wonder how he justifies this?

During the heat of an argument one of my liberal friends once said "I'm not seeking truth here, I'm seeking advantage." Dayton is a liberal, so truth and consistency don't matter. Besides, with the media on his side no one will know except a few right wingers on FreeRepublic.

How long do they have to stay shut until they have saved enough to balance the budget?

I have not seen that story.

I’ve only seen stories about how much the state is losing.

Pioneer Press or Star & Sickle would neve pursue that story.

They should hire some carnival folks to run the parks and nobody would miss anything else. ;-)

If Marx Dayton would just sign any of the three budgets he's been presented, the budget would be balanced with the stroke of a pen.
