BREAKING: New Fast & Furious allegation about witness access to documents

A startling new allegation about possible tainting of potential witness testimony before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has surfaced in a letter sent yesterday by Congressman Darrell Issa and Senator Charles Grassley to Attorney General Eric Holder.

In their letter, obtained by this column, Issa and Grassley reveal:

“We have recently learned that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has afforded potential witnesses for the Committees’ investigation into Operation Fast and Furious access to a shared drive on its computer system replete with pertinent investigative documents, including official ATF e-mails. Although our staff has been advised the Department has since terminated access to this document cache, we write to seek additional information relating to this egregious decision. We also ask that you promptly self-report this matter to the Office of Inspector General (OIG).”

According to the letter, Grassley and Issa understand that the shared drive contains documents that have been provided to Issa’s House committee and Grassley’s Senate Judiciary Committee, where he is ranking Republican member. They assert that the witnesses who have seen these documents had not seen them previously. Independent blogger Mike Vanderboegh also writes about this new twist in the investigation here.

“Allowing witnesses access to such documents could taint their testimony by allowing them to tailor their responses to what they think the Committees already know. Additionally, witnesses who gain access to documents they have not previously seen could alter their recollection of events. This practice harms not only our investigation, but also the independent investigation that you instructed the Inspector General to conduct.”

“One Congressional source familiar with the Fast and Furious investigation wondered if this computer file access was permitted so that potential witnesses could “get on the same page in a benign way” or to get their stories straight.”

“Well, of course. I’m still waiting for my “white skin privilege” check to show up in the mail, though. “

And waiting for Holder to get the boot.

This is an important story:

“O’Brien told the street guys, ‘you are going to lie about this,” according to the source. But, they said, the street agents are “very anxious to be interviewed” by “someone in authority” from Senator Grassley’s or Congressman Issa’s offices.

This is no different from a hit-and-run driver going home and having a drink before the police come to his house, so he can claim a breathalizer result is not from driving drunk but from having a drink at home before the police arrive.

"We also ask that you promptly self-report this matter to the Office of Inspector General (OIG).”

Any bets on when that will happen?

This thread has just added to the FreeRepublic "bang list" (firearms interest list) by adding the keyword "banglist".

Any time a firearms-related thread is created on FreeRepublic, please be sure to add the "banglist" keyword to it so that interested FReepers don't miss it. Just a suggestion.

"How low can you go?" is a meaningless question when playing liberal limbo.

Sheesh...How will America ever get her self-respect back?

Q. So you have a link on your computer so that you know what we have been provided by Justice?

A. Yes. There is a link in our computer for Gunrunner, Fast and Furious produced to Congress, and there is (sic) updates every once in a while of those documents that are being produced.

So, despite the legalistic quibbling of ATFSA, I am sticking by my sources and sticking by the story.

The Tampa Field Division of ATF, headed by Virginia O’Brien, is said by ATF agents in her own office to have crafted and executed a plan to “walk” 200 hundred firearms to cartel buyers in Honduras, thus involving yet another sovereign nation in what amounts to an act of war.

It goes without saying that the chances of this happening without the knowledge of the DEA, State Department and CIA are slim to none.

Strikes me as witness tampering, which is definetly a crime in it’s own right.

PLEASE light up the phones in D.C. Demand your congressman and both Senators push for a Special Prosecutor.

This makes Watergate look like a church social.

Also call Fox News these hearings should get the same wall to wall coverage as they gave the Casey Anthony trial.

By the time this is finished there’s likely going to be literally hundreds of felonies which [will] have been committed.
