Mitch McConnell is right now talking about making a historic capitulation. So fearful of being blamed for a default, McConnell is proposing a compromise that lets Barack Obama raise the debt ceiling without making any spending cuts at all.

- Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell proposed a “backup plan” on Tuesday that would allow a divided Congress to raise the debt ceiling with just the votes of Democrats.

The complicated legislative maneuver would avert an imminent default and let Republicans wash their hands of the politically toxic issue.

As outlined by McConnell, President Barack Obama would formally request an increase in the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling, which Congress would reject through a “resolution of disapproval.”

Obama would then veto that resolution and send it back to Congress. If Congress failed to muster the two-thirds vote needed to override a veto, the debt ceiling would effectively be lifted by the amount Obama had requested.

Obama and congressional leaders have failed so far to come up with a budget deal that could pass both the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and the Democratic-controlled Senate.

"Smoke and mirrors," from the guy who just accused Obama of the same.

It will end the GOP. Period. It is awful. All that work to get them in for this. Disgusting. There is no way to spin it.

The Republican’s reputation proceeds them. The only question remaining is when and how. I posted in response to one member here shortly after the 2010 election that now [then] would be a good time for the Tea Party to begin separating from the Republicans. A number of respondees said that we needed the Republicans. As the Republican Party draws closer to the Democrats, is that still the case?

McConnell already spun it. He says raising the debt limit is the responsible thing to do (to avert default), but no way will the GOP be responsible for raising the debt limit.

The root of the problem is still Congress, which passed the spending legislation. It's not as though Obama is going to be spending money that Congress didn't authorize be spent.

Wall Street Journal has the plan:

It is as stated by this poster. A total cave in.

Make him pay in the next election. He saw his pal McBackstabber come out okay in his election. Had John not been re-elected Mitch would not be doing this.

The Rinos join the DNC in loving the idea of raising taxes and keeping Federal power as big and unconstitutional as they can make it. They are regressives.

However, ole Mitch is in the Senate and the Senate Rinos have already let it be known they love Barack and hate the Tea Party.

Hold your powder. Just because some blog reports it, doesn’t mean it’s true. I hope it isn’t true but I’ll hold off judgement for now.

Now would be a good time to ask Obama to release his records proving him to be eligible to be the POTUS. Or include that requirement in the bill. Time to play hardball.

Great idea but won’t happen. The beltway establishment doesn’t want to go anywhere his nativity story.

Republicans don’t seem to be caving.

THEY ALWAYS CAVE! That’s how we got into the mess we are in today. Hell, they even caved years ago when they held the majority in both houses!

I make no statement in jest when I pronounce the GOP as the” Go along to get along” party. They have no stones, no backbones, and no aggressive behavior. They have been totally domesticated by the Democrats.

I’m no fan of Mitch McConnell, but I think that Mr. Erickson is mischaracterizing his proposal. Senator McConnell is proposing a law that would give the president until August 2 to increase the debt ceiling by $700 billion *and cut spending this year by the same amount*, which debt-ceiling increase and cuts would go into effect unless both houses of Congress vote against them in an up-or-down vote (and vote to override if Obama vetoes). Obama would then be able to increase the debt ceiling by $900 billion and cut spending by the same amount by December 31, 2011 IIRC, with the same caveats as before. Finally, Obama would be able to raise the debt ceiling and cut spending by another $900 billion by April 2012 IIRC, with the same caveats as before.

I’m not sure I agree with this plan, but it certainly does *not* give Obama carte blanche to raise the debt ceiling without cutting spending. And Obama wouldn’t be able to rajse taxes using this mechanism.

Oh boy! According to McConnell, Obama would take the political hit for requesting a raise in the debt ceiling. Very well might be, but where's the spending cuts McConnell. You dufus!

I just saw Al Sharpton subbing for Cenk Uyghur a minute ago with James Clyburn angrily denouncing this as a fiendish tactic to force Obama to take full responsibility for raising the debt ceiling.

The dems think it’s a trap. They are urging Obama to refuse to bite.
