Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, says he supports Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s “contingency plan” designed to force President Obama to assume nearly all of the responsibility for raising the debt ceiling.

“Obama is playing politics,” Norquist tells National Review Online in an interview. “Republicans need to force him to do what the established press is not doing. He says he’s got a serious proposal. Could we see it written down please?”

Norquist is another one of the inside the Beltway legends in their own mind who thinks that McConnell is making some kind of brilliant move. The problem is that the American people, especially the Tea Party movement, will see this as a victory for Obama. The MSM will play it that way, i.e., a strong and courageous Obama faced down the "terrorist" GOP that tried to cut Medicare and SS to protect tax cuts for the rich.

The McConnell plan will be a political disaster for the GOP. It will be divisive and self-defeating. A GOP that reaped the rewards of the historic 2010 midterms is on probabtion with the people who put them back in control of the House. Surrender to Obama will lead to a third party. This may be the straw that broke the camel's back for conservatives.
