McConnell: “A real solution is unattainable” as long as Obama is president

It was a floor speech to be quoted and re-quoted. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) this morning spoke movingly about Republicans’ commitment “to choose a path that actually reflects the will of the people” when it comes to an agreement about a debt limit increase (or lack thereof).

That path, he said, will include the responsible fulfillment of obligations on the debt — but it will also entail an ongoing commitment to pressure the administration to “rein in Washington — not to freeze it into place.”

If McConnell meant everything he said, it’s good news for the significant majority of Americans who oppose raising the debt ceiling because it implies Republicans will at least not go along with an increase unless Democrats offer something more than the shenanigan of future spending cuts that could easily be reversed by future Congresses.

McConnell was clearly proud of the conviction Republicans have demonstrated in deficit-reduction negotiations so far, but he didn’t sound the least bit optimistic about the possibility of a real agreement with the administration and congressional Democrats.

“[A]fter years of discussions and months of negotiations, I have little question that as long as this president is in the Oval Office, a real solution is unattainable,” McConnell said. “I was one of those who had hoped we could do something big for the country. But in my view the president has presented us with three choices: smoke and mirrors, tax hikes or default. Republicans choose none of the above. I hoped to do good — but I refuse to do harm.”

More highlights from the speech:

At a moment when we needed leadership the most, we got the least. The financial security of the nation was being gambled on the President’s wager that he could convince people our problems would be solved if we just all agreed to take it out on the guy in the fancy house down the street. In my view, that was the saddest commentary on the status of the leadership at the White House.

And I’m proud of the fact that Republicans refused to play along. We stood our ground. We know that what Americans need right now is for government to make job creation easier, not harder. And we said so. At a time when 14 million Americans are looking for work, we refused to support a tax hike. We supported jobs and economic growth instead. …

Republicans have told the President we’re not interested in business as usual in Washington. We mean it. We will not be party to something that claims to save trillions but leaves it to future generations to pick up the tab, and to future Congresses to reverse it with a simple vote. We will not pretend that a bad deal is a good one.

That’s highly encouraging, as McConnell will be among the leaders who continue negotiations at the White House today, even as Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner clamors ever-more-loudly for a deal and Obama presses whatever edge he’s got. McConnell and the other Republican leaders will need every ounce of the steely resolve McConnell expressed this morning — as well as consistent confirmation of the support of the American people — to continue to stand firm in the face of Democrat demands.

McConnell: “A real solution is unattainable” as long as Obama is president

Well Mitch, The Constitution that 0bama wipes his feet on daily, does have a solution for this dilemma, if only the people who have been elected to enforce it had the courage to act.

Tough talk from genteel Mitch McConnell. If Republican House & Senate actions on the debt ceiling crisis reflect what McConnell is saying, we may finally begin the long road back to fiscal sanity in Washington. However, having had the metaphorical football pulled away so many times before, most conservatives will believe that congressional Republicans have a spine if and when they see it. That means a 'hell no' vote on raising the debt ceiling with tax hikes and false promises of 'future' spending cuts from Obama and the Democrats attached. Vote for a bill to raise the debt ceiling with current spending cuts and NO tax hikes and let the senate Democrats fail to pass it, removing the stigma of 'causing' the government to default from the Republicans. If the senate passes such a bill to raise the debt ceiling and Obama is stupid enough to veto it, he owns the default. If it actually happens, Barry can kiss his re-election goodbye. If it doesn't, his dire warnings (scare tactics) will prove to be a lie and again, make his re-election almost impossible. I await the Republicans next move.

His plan is to give Obama the contents of the purse, the key to the purse, and the hole dam purse.

A storm is about to descend on Mr. O’Connell’s head.

“to choose a path that actually reflects the will of the people”

Well, if it takes any of them more that about 15 seconds to say out loud what that actually is, either they don't know or they are back to slinging bs.

I am constantly amazed how politicians can make everyday 5th grade common sense problems seem hard, complex and unattainable.

They control the House. Stand up in front of the cameras and clearly say that "the current President appears to be more interested in lying to our finest Citizens regarding their due than actively attempting to solve any problems. A Republican Budget has been submitted, Øbamas budget was rejected in a 100% no vote."

"100% no."

"Therefore the funding for the following will be suspended indefinitely until the Republican budget is allowed to proceed to a vote. The entirety of ATF, DEA, Dept. of "Edjukashun," Department of Commerce, TSA... gone in entirety. IRS will be replaced with a one page form for individuals and 2-3 for most businesses. Department of Labor... gone in entirety. FDA can stick with inspections only. Dept of Energy... gone in entirety. FEMA will run warehouses of emergency supplys and nothing else. Small Business Administration, HUD, Department of the Interior, Department of Agriculture, and finally, Department of Homeland Security... gone in entirety."

"Once the Congressional Budget Office has an opportunity to evaluate these minor adjustment in infrastructure and they are fully analyzed, only then will the real cuts will be decided upon. As the current President does not have the ability to grasp the concept of negotiations and prefers to repeat childish analogies there is no further need for discussions or meetings."

"Finally, it is expected it will take approximately ten (10) years before any meaningful facts can be determined as to the results of eliminating the above agencies and programs. Untill such determinations are made, the above agencies and programs will remain 100% defunded."

Make that same speech, WORD FOR WORD, until the "budget deadline" arrives and then announce that "due to the common sense spending adjustment there appears to be more than sufficient funding for SS, Medicare, the military and TBD critical services."

Little Ø'Bammy will burst into flames from his "Irish roots" to his jughead ears.
