True, but by his own repeated behavior it’s pretty clear he may have earned the beating as the only way to subdue him. And he was not a bloody pulp afterwards. He got a beating, but he earned it by fleeing the police and resisting arrest. His criminal mindset and lifestyle have not ended. The riots killed and destroyed in the poorest neighborhoods. That was foolish and counter productive.
He was also high on PCP, you never know what somebody on PCP is capable of doing.

According to Wikipedia (which is an iffy source) he was not on PCP. However, there is no way the police could have known that at the time and he was acting like someone on PCP and he is a pretty big guy. So it really doesn’t matter whether he was or wasn’t, the police can only go by the behavior they see, but I thought I’d let you know there is contradictory information out there.
