MillerCoors loses right to sell beer in Minnesota during shutdown

Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal - by Mark Reilly, Managing Editor

Date: Wednesday, July 13, 2011, 6:48am CDT

Mega-brewer Miller Coors must pull all of its beer — all 39 brands — from Minnesota store shelves because its branding license wasn't renewed before the state shutdown.

KSTP-TV has this absolute howler of a story, along with reaction from retailers, which is pretty much what you'd expect it would be. The beer company says it sent in the checks (brand licenses cost $30 for three years), but acknowledges they weren't processed in time.

The story doesn't address whether MillerCoors would have to pull its beer from bars, as well — but regardless, bars have their own shutdown problems. Many didn't renew their purchasing licenses before the shutdown, meaning they might run out of beer in the coming weeks, the Star Tribune reports. Many cigarette retailers are in similar straits.

Miller Coors products are not beer!

Perhaps true, but chill a Coors Light to the slush point (27F by my tests) and slug one down after yard work on a blistering hot afternoon and I say it's awesome.

Check received by state June 27 (for the corrected amount) , 3 days letter they get a letter saying ‘your license is expired’ .
(shutdown began June 30) ...what a bunch of tyranical buffoons.

gross inefficiency by bloated goobermint on display again. And some still want them to run their healthcare?

I spent the end of my youth in Europe ...including my 20th birthday at Octoberfest in Munich! I had had some beer before that, but after a year of their brews, and especially Denmark’s Tuborg and Carlsberg, when I returned, the only American beer I could drink for over a year was Coors or Olympia...both hard to get in the Midwest.

I’ve had quite a renaissance since then (including a collection of over 1000 different microbrew beer bottles) and would include at least three Summit (St. Paul) and three Lagunitas (CA) offerings amongst my top ten!

Yea, I had a friend who worked at Budweiser’s distribution warehouse for the DFW area, and he got a bunch of free beer. Almost makes me want to work at a brewery :)

The MillerCoors brewing company had been told by the State Department of Public Safety that it needed to stop distribution in Minnesota and would have to devise a scheme to remove its products from stores, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. The employees in charge of renewing the company’s brand license had been deemed noncritical after the shutdown and were unavailable to process the necessary paperwork.

“non-critical” since it’s only The State depriving people from making a living.

“necessary paperwork” meaning we needed to create another bureacracy.
