14 Cities That Are Being Eaten Alive By Public Sector Workers
Business Insider ^ | Jul. 13, 2011 | Grace Wyler

Although national attention has largely focused on state budget battles like Wisconsin's union showdown and Minnesota's state shutdown, the real spending struggle is actually taking place at the local level.

As federal stimulus money runs dry, states are scaling back on municipal aid and revenue sharing. The cuts are adding immense pressure to strained local governments, many of which are already struggling under huge debt burdens. After years of declining tax revenues, cities and towns across the country are now running out of ways to deal with their ballooning budget deficits.

Public employee costs account for a large share of municipal budget woes. While worker compensation accounts for just 30% of state spending, personnel costs tends to eat up between 70% and 80% of local government funds.

He has a job yes?

Just that day, he had put the finishing touches on a new splash pad. He even let the kids play in the water that afternoon - the day before the splash pad was scheduled to open. Who says government is inefficient...

“How in the hell is a city employee, worth more than a Productive side employee?? and How was this allowed to happen?”

In the commercial environment somebody is always looking at the bottom line. If I put so much as one hour of overhead on my timecard my boss would call me up and ask what it was for. Often, I’d be told to take it off. That means either making up the time on my time or mischarging. I always made it up on my time as mischarging to a federal contract is a federal crime.

I had a conversation with a state worker friend. When personal computer word processors became available the company I was working for laid off the typing pool that month. Hundreds of women were gone in 30 days. The state, on the other hand, just kept the typing pool on until they retired or eventually found other work in the state. Some of them, he said, sat and read books for two or three years.

THAT is the difference. A private worker MUST pay his way. A state worker isn’t expected to be productive; just part of the voting and management empire(s).

I'm surprised that Colorado Springs in #3 on this list, probably the only conservative city of the 14. Does anyone know why?

I'll take a stab at that.

If an effort to correct the situation we recently have gone to a full time Mayor.

In the past the city council and mayor were temporary. At one point a few years ago a lady was appointed mayor who was the wife of a prominent attorney. Shortly after being appointed mayor she got a divorce and she came out of the closet as a lesbian. At that point Political Correctness ran amok. It wasn't a pretty sight. We are now in recovery.

Hope this helps.

Oh, please your hystrionics are silly. This country has has awful leadership for centuries after since Jefferson unleashed Class Warfare in all its fury. What we are facing now is way beyond Urkel and the Idiots and is not limited to the US. But any collapse as you envision will take decades if not a century to go down to raw survival. There is no Mongol Horde at the gates.

But this is a nationwide systemic problem. There aren’t many greener pastures besides Texas, and Perry is slicing real budget here. So Texas isn’t as good for parasites.

When the parasites run out of places to go, they get violent. Witness Greece...

It is a process not a magic moment. I’ve lived long enough to see it-it is really happening. The trend is down.

When the parasites no longer have a host to prey, they usually move on to greener pastures to suck dry.

Most human parasites live close to bodies of water. It's in their bones. They will tell you they feel claustrophobic living far inland. When the host dies they are genetically predisposed to get on the next boat and sail away to the next victim.

There is no Mongol Horde at the gates.

Well, until we get one I guess the gangbangers, communists, anarchists, radical environmentalists, statists, Mexican Mafia and stealth jihadis will just have to do.

While I admire what y’all are doing in Texas, you might want to keep an eye on this:

Our most dangerous enemies are internal. Even the Illegals would be a minor irritant but for the Party of Treason, the Democrats.

New Haven, CT is on the list. Not at all surprised. It’s also #4 on the list of most dangerous cities. Maybe there s connection. (Duh!)

I'll bet the 'most dangerous' cities also have high rates of people on Social Security Disability. Not talking about disabled vets or people who are blind or those really disabled - talking about gang-bangers, drug addicts and alcoholics... sitting on the dole forever.

My former home town is at number two on the list. Can’t say that I’m the least bit surprised. The bureaucracy there is quite something to behold.
