New York City’s vast fleet of vehicles is getting greener. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the city is acquiring 50 Chevrolet Volts as part of its strategy to cut air pollution, carbon emissions and gasoline consumption.

The Volts are part of a larger group of electric cars to be used by a number of city departments, but the Volts slated to become police patrol cars are likely to get the most attention. General Motors Co. says the Volt will be the first electric car used by the New York City police department, which already has a diverse collection of vehicles ranging from traditional Ford Crown Victoria sedans to Nissan Altima hybrids to electric scooters and golf carts.

“This is the latest and largest-ever addition of electric vehicles to the City’s fleet, which is already the largest municipal clean-air vehicle fleet in the nation,” Bloomberg said of the total of 70 new electric vehicles. The addition boosts the city’s electric-vehicle total to 430.

Are you planning on getting into many head on collisions or something? Perhaps you should read about the collision and what cars.com had to say about it. You know, the ones that were driving the car, not some second party entity. From cars.com:

Though it cost more than the initial estimate, we were pleased to determine that the cost to repair a plug-in car wasn't as high as we had feared. In fact, it was only $2,181 more expensive than it would be to repair a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu subjected to a similar front-end "hit," according to West Loop Auto Body, which restored our Volt.

A cop I know form a 3 square mile city told me that their patrol cars drive about 100,000 miles a year. They are going to need to come trade in their car for one with a fresh battery 5-6 times a shift.

If it was good enough for the NYPD, then the entire
New York city government should get the electric "Chair."

"It's true what you heard, I'm no longer in favor of the electric chair, I'm now in favor of the electric bench!"
