Guilderland (NY) Town Clerk quits over gay marriage

GUILDERLAND –-The Guilderland Town Clerk, who also serves as the town's official marriage officer, has submitted a letter of resignation saying her religious beliefs prevent her from marrying gay couples.

Rosemary Centi advised the town supervisor of her decision earlier this week. Citing her Catholic Faith, Centi will no longer be marrying same-sex couples when the Marriage Equality Law takes effect July 24.

Centi will remain on as the town's clerk and continue to issue marriage licenses to all eligible couples. Her resignation only affects her appointed position as marriage officiant.

Reached by phone Thursday morning, Town Supervisor Ken Runion told CBS 6 news, "I was surprised because we all take the oath of civil service and promise to follow the law. . . Regardless of personal beliefs, Same sex marriage is now legal and we have to follow the law."

Runion said Centi never discussed her religious or political views with him.

He also said the Town Board will discuss a replacement for Centi at its August 16th meeting. Until then, two town justices will perfom marriage ceremonies in Centi's absence.

Centi was elected to the town clerk position back in 2000 and was appointed as a marriage officer in 2001. She is up for re-election in November, but is running unopposed.

She is the latest government official to resign in protest of the marriage equality law.

The town clerk in Barker, NY resigned from her post last week, also citing religious beliefs for choosing not to issue marriages license to same-sex couples. Barker is located in Broome County, about 10 miles north of Binghamton.

Now wait a minute... I thought the NY Law just passed had a religious conscience exemption?

Unless... the law is interpreted differently or means something different, she should not be compelled to marry the gay couple and that couple should find a clerk with no such religious convictions.

Just saying...

She is the latest government official to resign in protest of the marriage equality law.

This was forced on the people of NY. No one got to vote, and it's their state.
This is the sort of thing that happens when government gets too powerful and the powerful can be bought with a large amount of campaign cash.

I've taught my kids to turn their heads away when they see homosexuals. It's not something they want imprinted in their memories.

That’s at least two so far. More to follow - many, many more.

Of course, homosexual “marriage” only affects the two people involved; no one else. /sarc

God bless you! We live in such dark times. As the darkness continues to spread and attempt to envelop us, as loving parents, we seek out ways to shelter and protect our children. As our secularist society continues its march into depravity, we can only shield our children's eyes and pray for their immortal souls.

This was forced on the people of NY. No one got to vote, and it's their state.

You got that right! Worse yet, the senators we elected to prevent this from happening, disregarded their mandate and voted against the will of their constituents.

May your children grow in wisdom and the love of Christ!

No. That exception only applies to employees of religious organizations as defined by the State of New York. In this instance, Ms Centi, is an elected official. It does not apply to her.

The law does not exempt public officials from carrying out their duties because of their religious convictions. Nor should it. The law is the law, and right now (for the moment, at least), the law in New York allows for 'marriages' between same-sex couples. Public officials are hired/elected to carry out the law, not to refuse to do so based on their religious convictions. If the law conflicts with their religious convictions (or any other strongly held personal convictions), the correct thing to do is resign, as this woman did.

Read the third paragraph/sentence.

I don’t understand all the adulation.

That’s funny. I even actually read the article and I still missed that.

Just a meaningless no-cost gesture.

RE: The law does not exempt public officials from carrying out their duties because of their religious convictions.

________________________________________________________________________________

Well, what to say?

I often hear Liberals talk about “tolerance”. I also often hear a lot of them lecturing conservatives, especially those who are religious, not to IMPOSE their values on others.

What they don’t understand ( or perhaps refuse to understand) is this -— LAWS ARE NOT VALUES NEUTRAL.

Every Law passed IS an IMPOSITION of some value on others (even on those who disagree with the values underlying law ).

In America, laws will either be compatible or conform to Judaeo-Christian values, secular values, Sharia law or others, but it WILL REFLECT SOMEONE’s VALUES.

There’s no such thing as not imposing your values on others. The fact is — YOU WILL.

That NY chose to VOTE INTO POWER Legislators who insist that the homosexual lifestyle is normal and moral says a lot about the state of morality in the Empire State.

BTW, this woman did not quit, as in resign her position as Town Clerk.

The article states that:

“Her resignation only affects her appointed position as marriage officiant.”

She is still Town Clerk (until maybe someone makes a big stink about it and then sues her in court).

“This was forced on the people of NY. No one got to vote, and it’s their state.”

But they did vote for it when they voted for officials that said they were in favor of homosexual marriage. I don’t mean to be a hard-@$$ about it but people need to remember that when you vote for a representative you are voting for all the votes you think they will cast. There are long term consequences to a 90% re-election rate.

This woman has moral courage. Exactly what this country needs. People who claim to be conservative or constitutionalists need to follow in her footsteps.

But they did vote for it when they voted for officials that said they were in favor of homosexual marriage.

Not true! From the Wall Street Journal ...

Meanwhile, the four Republicans who voted for gay marriage all told voters in their election campaign they opposed gay marriage—sometimes on video less than a month before they flipped. Voters don't like politicians who flip, especially under political pressure from Democrats.

New York's GOP Lets Down the Base

ALL of them assured their voter base that they would oppose ssm. ALL flip flopped. If it happens in NY, it can happen anywhere. Follow the money trail.

Some additional information ..

The Buffalo News reports this week, "Grisanti's Coffers Grow After Gay Marriage Vote":

"Advocates of gay marriage pumped about $50,000 into the political campaign account of Republican State Sen. Mark J. Grisanti of Buffalo after he voted June 24 in the historic session that legalized same-sex marriage in New York.

"The donations included $10,300 from New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, who was a strong proponent of the new law, and $10,000 from Colorado resident Tim Gill, who heads a group that has promoted gay marriage laws here and in other states. "Other donors to Grisanti who have publicly backed gay marriage rights include $5,000 from Miami-area resident Jonathan Kislak, $2,000 from Carol Master of Massachusetts, $10,000 from Albany-area resident Frank Selvaggi and $5,000 from Manhattan real estate developer Donald Capoccia."

$50,000 in big checks from rich Manhattan and out-of-state donors, the buddies of Bloomberg and Tim Gill.

What we have here is a massive public campaign to normalize infidelity in both senses of the word—to make cash the payoff for selling out voters.

As I noted in my previous post, if it can happen here, it can happen anywhere, even in your state.

we have to follow the law

No we don't. A government that edicts laws against natural justice only makes itself an outlaw.
