Navy training is a joke. They don't train with assault rifles, basic is more like college than military service.

In boot camp they basically prepare them to be fleet sailors, not naval infantry, a role served quite nicely by US Marines. After boot camp sailors go off to A school to learn the specialties they will pursue.

Some guys (sorry, showing my age again), er, folks learn to repair boilers, some folks learn to repair sophisticated electronic weapons systems. Some learn to launch planes off the deck of a pitching ship, some becomes Seals and get to kill bad people.

If you're going to have a need to use an assault rifle, don't worry, they teach you how to use it.

Having gone from being a complete screw-up in college, to bootcamp, and then on to active duty, I can say that the Navy did a much better job at teaching me to be a man.

One of my regrets is that I didn't do boot camp first before going to college. I think I would have had a better appreciation for the educational opportunity I was receiving at the time.

I can't remember much by way of posters or things at boot camp...I suppose we were too busy moving our racks to general quarters before "making the walls sweat".
