ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Rebel leaders won recognition as the legitimate government of Libya from the United States and other world powers on Friday in a major boost to the rebels' faltering campaign to oust Muammar Gaddafi.

Recognition of the rebels, announced by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at a meeting in Turkey of the international contact group on Libya, is an important diplomatic step which could unlock billions of dollars in frozen Libyan funds.

Looks like Obama and Hillary are upping the ante on this one

Uping the ante?

More like both of them are beyond delusional and further negatively eroding US foreign policy. We are so fraked. We back so-called rebels with mixed affiliations with varied terrorist groups, namely al Qaeda, and we do so in an illegal action. =.=

This will really untie Obama’s hands with regard to financial and military aid to this new “legitimate” government. Looks like they snuck the news of this out during Obama’s Friday press conference.

Republicans, even conservative Republicans, have said virtually NOTHING about Obama’s illegal war against Libya. It’s kind of like ClintBilly’s illegal war against Yugoslavia, which we fought on the wrong side. The Republicans objected for a day or two, but then went along, for fear of being thought anti-military or something.

And Kaddafi is a convenient villain. Never mind that he turned over a new leaf and the opposition is far worse.

The parallels between Obama and Carter presidencies. I remember in the days after the ayatollah (how do you spell ayatola?) Khomeini, C arter went on TV and said we recognize the new government of Iran. the Shah was sent packing, and we made nice with the mullahs, but it was a matter of weeks before we had the hostage crisis. The good part is that the election of Reagan came next. This time, we will get Palin, I hope. Seems to me Palin is more like Reagan than Romney is.

Good points. The only difference this time is that we’re backing the bad guys in multiple places at the same time.

And yes, Palin (or someone like her... if there is anyone) is what we need... before this tidal wave hits our shores.

China and Russia, which have taken a softer line toward Gaddafi, were invited to the contact group meeting for the first time, but decided not to become involved.

Yep, 30 countries at the conference and only the United States is identified individually, others as "world powers" (snicker).

Without Russia ans China there will be no UN approval.

Me thinks Russia and China are playing "rope-a-dope", and this will blow up like Iran did.

“U.S. recognizes Libya rebels as legitimate government “

Who the hell are they and where is this “government” they are running?

Hell the Confederates had a better structure in place, with a winning professional army to boot, and we sure as heck didn’t want some other nation to recognize them as anything by rebels.

Turns Libya’s oil money over to the Brotherhood, now that 0sama’s death has caused a bit of a cash-flow pinch.

The rebels are not even in power!

We have absolute dunces in the White House.

If a Republican president tried this kind of B.S., the screams from the media would be instantaneous. We would be hearing about it for months.

Since Qaddafi is now no longer considered ‘head of state’, he’s eligible for the Navy Seal/Bin Laden treatment.

118 days in, nearly 17 weeks of illegal war.

Obama said, "days not weeks." Obama said there's no time to get Congressional authorization but had time to go to the UN. Obama said it's not about regime change but Gaddafi has been a target of bombings--assassination attempts. Obama said it's not about picking winners or losers but obviously is. Obama said it's about supporting a "no fly zone" to protect the Libyan people. Despite our so-called "limited, support role," Air Force planes are still bombing Libya, even killing the people we're there to protect.

Now we're recognizing "rebels" as a legitimate government of Libya. These are rebels the international press has tied to Al Queda of North Africa, to Iraq insurgents who shot at, bombed and killed our own military and worse.

The Congress has never authorized any of this activity and, in fact, voted repeatedly not to authorize.

That will be kind of embarrassing if the rebels never manage to win.

Yes, Hillary seems to be staking her so-called "legacy" on Libya.
