Mayor Rahm Emanuel said he will send layoff notices to up to 625 city employees today as he tries to close a $30 million budget hole.
Custodians, call center operators at the city's water department and seasonal workers at the Department of Transportation will be among those affected.
Emanuel said he will close an entire $30 million budget hole left by the expiration of a deal with City Hall labor unions for unpaid days off. The mayor previously had turned up the pressure on unions for concessions or cost-cutting ideas at a series of news conferences.
"It has been two weeks and despite ongoing talks, none of the changes have been addressed or agreed upon," Emanuel said todayof the time he has given unions to close the gap.
The Chicago Federation of Labor said in a statement union officials were perplexed by the layoff decision. They scheduled an afternoon news conference to respond.
Emanuel also laid out more work rule changes as he asks unions for savings.
Among those proposed changes, Emanuel suggested reducing the number of paid holidays from 12 to 9 to match other city trade employees.
He also said he's like to pay hoisting engineers different rates, based on the class of machines they are operating.

Rip Van Winkle?
The Ballerina was Elected in 2010...................
Good deal. He will earn the hatred of the people of Chicago very quickly. They put him in office; now they can suffer the consequences.
Eeks! I try not to follow Chicago politics as much as I can. Chicago politics landed this country Zero and we’re all paying for it now.
I’d bet a dollar to a donut he will blame this on Bush...........just wait and see.....................
What’s the difference?..................
("HAHAHA" finger-pointing graphic here.)
I thought he was elected in 2010?
and it took them till 2011 to see if he could steal the election...........
There’s a lotta palms that’s gonna need greasing very soon...................
A Democrat who has a plan to actually close a budget hole, and is willing to alienate unions to do it? I’m amazed and impressed.
Where was this guy when he was Obama’s chief of staff?
Private sector paid holidays: 6. Christmas Day, New Year’s, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day. I guess it would make sense that we have to work alot more holidays in order to pay our taxes to afford the government employees to have 12 paid holidays.
Whats the difference?..................

The phantom employees don’t call in sick and they contribute more to the mayors re-election fund.
My guess is that this is the last round of that and all of the city workers, county workers, fireman, and policeman are whistling past the graveyard. There is now too much public information available for that method to work anymore.
Unbelievable salaries they make in that miserable city, even the laborers. I can never come close to those, I’m sad to admit.
