A man was killed in a drive-by shooting early this morning, one of several instances of overnight violence that also left five people wounded.
About 1:30 a.m., two men were standing on the sidewalk in the 3600 block of West Chicago Avenue in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side when a light-colored vehicle drove by and fired shots at the men, according to a release from the Chicago Police Department's News Affairs.
A 28-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to his chest and later died. He was identified as Stanley Washington of the 7500 block of South Peoria Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. He was pronounced dead at 1:45 a.m. at Norwegian-American Hospital.
A 23-year-old man was shot in his abdomen and was taken to Mount Sinai in serious condition.
In other shootings, at 1:52 a.m. in the West Humboldt Park neighborhood, a 52-year-old woman was shot in the neck by a male attacker in the 1100 block of North Keystone Avenue. She was taken in serious condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

Well, so much for strict gun control and Illinois remaining the only state in the U.S. not having a conceal/carry law on it’s books. I don’t mind the gangbangers and general miscreants killing each other regularly on the streets of Chicago; it’s the innocent bystanders that is of real concern. As for the Chicago cops, given their desire not to be sued due to the liability laws there, i think they should be considered a branch of the Streets and Sanitation Department, “crime scene clean up crew”.....
Impossible, only upstanding citizens can get a gun in Chicago.

Dad who shot assailant at bus stop acquitted of murder

A Cook County judge acquitted a South Side father of murder Friday, saying he acted in self-defense when he fatally shot a man who had accosted him and his daughters at a bus stop last year.
Hours later, Elliot Mayfield, 53, who had been locked up since his arrest in February 2010, walked out of Cook County Jail a free man, carrying a plastic bag filled with his belongings over one shoulder.
“I’m just grateful to God and thankful that I had a fair and impartial judge,” Mayfield said.
According to testimony, Samuel Fullilove, 33, was extremely intoxicated when he approached Mayfield and his two daughters, ages 11 and 15, and their young friend as they waited for a bus at 6114 S. King Drive.
Fullilove offered to sell drugs to those at the bus stop, but Mayfield refused. When Fullilove became aggressive, Mayfield showed him his gun and said, “I’ll use it,” according to testimony.
