I do recall a story that Brit pols threatened to discontinue the monarchy altogether unless Charles would agree to abdicate in favor of Will. Any recent stories on this?

The Supreme Governor of the Church of England is a title held by the British monarchs which signifies their titular leadership over the Church of England.

The Queen could not attend the wedding of Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles because the church does not recognize the union. Charles will likely find himself passed over on the ground that he is not able to fulfill the duties to the church.
