Brazil launches construction of four Scorpene-class submarines

The construction of four Scorpene-class attack submarines for the Brazilian Navy was launched on Saturday at a plant near Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil and France signed a $4.25-billion contract on the construction of the four enlarged S-BR diesel-electric submarines, jointly designed by France and Spain, in 2008. The first submarine is expected to enter service in 2017.

Scorpene-class submarines are equipped with six 533-mm torpedo tubes for 18 torpedoes or SM.39 Exocet anti-ship missiles, or 30 mines in place of torpedoes.

Unlike other modifications of the Scorpene-class submarine, the S-BR submarine is not equipped with an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system which allows a submarine to operate without the need to surface or use a snorkel to access atmospheric oxygen.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who was present at Saturday's ceremony, said the construction of the submarines was an important step that would help the Brazilian Navy reach a new level of technological development.

Brazil and France have also signed an agreement to develop a French/Brazilian nuclear powered submarine. In line with the deal, Brazil's first nuclear submarine is scheduled to enter service in 2023.

“The commies of the world are up to something..

The Communist Chinese have repeatedly surfaced their diesel boats close enough to US carriers to fire torpedoes. This creates the impression, rightly or wrongly, that any country with a diesel sub can take out an aircraft carrier.

Now, would a savvy US fleet commander let the Chinese get close and pretend he doesn’t know they’re there? Probably. It makes them overconfident. Having said that, I’ve known several sub-jocks who claimed they always sank the carrier during war games. Then, they said the Navy would re-score and say the carrier was only damaged.

I suspect the day of massive aircraft carriers is over. I hope we don’t have our noses rubbed in it like the Japanese did with battleships in 1941. Each carrier has 90 aircraft (Israel has 90 aircraft total) and 5000 men. Each carrier represents a huge investment in men, material and labor. To lose one would be a catastrophe. To potentially lose them all to asymmetric warfare (mines, subs, fire and forget weapons, hypersonic missiles) would be insane folly. We need to start transitioning our Navy to whatever comes next. I understand we have them because, to become an Admiral, you must command a carrier.

I'll probably be accused of sounding like Rumsfeld. Always thot carriers projected our air power globally, but recently read we bombed Libya with US based planes. The question is are they worth their vulnerability?

Better keep an eye on this Connie B!!!ch. She will sell these subs to any anti American government or Muslim country ASAP to raise money for her wealth redistribution. Why are all the previously non socialist and non Communist countries in Latin America and South America taking such hard left turns? Do we need to add Brazil to the list targeting coordinates?

The Chinese did this once! In November 2006. It has been reported repeatedly to make it look like a repeated event. And a sub wouldn't surface to fire neither torpedoes nor ASMs.

The ship that this happened to was the last remaining non-nuclear carrier in active service, the Kitty Hawk, which has since been decommissioned. If I remember correctly, the group commander and the ship captain were relieved of duty.

I believe Israel’s F-16 inventory itself is over 300 aircraft.

“The Chinese did this once! In November 2006.”

An active duty chief PO on a nuclear carrier tells me it happens frequently. They had a sub take a photo of their aft watch, who was asleep, and email it to the bridge with a comment, “You seem to have a problem with your aft watch.”

The surfacing is to say, “Gotcha!” It’s a game and it’s being played every day. Now, does this mean the carrier doesn’t know they’re there? Maybe. Maybe not.

“I believe Israel’s F-16 inventory itself is over 300 aircraft.”

The article I read was talking about the IDF having 90 first line planes that could strke Iran. Distance may rule out F-16’s and I didn’t think about that.

A sub sinking a carrier would paint the subs owner(country) as glass parking lot territory..

We have many more aircraft carriers.. and immediately no sub could get near one.. carriers always have attack sub present.. If an “alleged” sub got near a carrier OUR sub knew for a good while before that..

Oh! the country that owned the sub would quickly become submarine-less.. i.e. open season.. and their “Navy” would become targets..

Another major reason to UN-Potus Zero Obama..

looks like Israel has 362 delivered F-16’s. No idea how many are still operational. But the article at the link is informative.

“A sub sinking a carrier would paint the subs owner(country) as glass parking lot territory..”

The USS Panay was sunk by the Japanese years before the war. Diplomatic fluffle, but no action. An American destroyer (the Rubin James?) was sunk by the Germans in the Atlantic long before Pearl Harbor. More diplomacy followed. Also, there’s no guarantee we’d know who sank the carrier. Hezbollah, a non-state actor, now has Chinese anti-ship missiles they’ve fired from shore. Hezbollah has damaged a couple of Israeli patrol boats and have sunk a (Greek? Don’t recall.)freighter. So, whose mine was it that sank the carrier?

Obama’s response to the Cheonan sinking was a note to “strongly deplore.” (I’m sure NK is shaking.) Do you really think Obama would nuke somebody for “defending themselves” from “American aggression?” I think he’d sooner die than use nukes against our enemies. But to use them against Tea Partiers in Texas, maybe-so.

That guy was lucky that someone didn't sneak up behind him, cut his throat and throw him off the fantail so the sharks could get rid of the evidence. That's how they used to get rid of the homos aboard ship. I've also heard stories of pilots who really pissed of their plane crews suffering that fate.

They have about a 100 F-16Is and about 25 F-15Is which can reach targets in Iran with minimal refuelling support. Other F-15s and F-16s could also do the same with refuellers.
