Israel-Iran War in September?

July 17,2011
Robert Wenzel

Zerohedge is reporting on some very interesting positioning of U.S. naval ships:

As the most recently updated naval map from Stratfor demonstrates, the CVN 77 G.H.W. Bush has just entered the Persian Gulf, the first time a US aircraft carrier has passed through the Straits of Hormuz in months. What is also notable is that the LHD 5 Bataan amphibious warfare ship has just weighed anchor right next to Libya: this is odd since the coast of Tripoli had been left unattended for many weeks by US attack ships. And topping it all off is that a third aircraft carrier, the CVN 73, is sailing west from the South China seas, potentially with a target next to CVN 76 Ronald Reagan which is the second carrier in the Straits of Hormuz area. Three carriers in proximity to Iran would be extremely troubling.

Zerohedge goes on to report:

CIA veteran Robert Baer, the man played by George Clooney in Syriana, who as Al Jazeera reports, appeared on KPFK Los Angeles, warning that Israeli PM Netanyahu is "likely to ignite a war with Iran in the very near future." It gets worse: "Masters asked Baer why the US military is not mobilising to stop this war from happening. Baer responded that the military is opposed, as is former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, who used his influence to thwart an Israeli attack during the Bush and Obama administrations. But he's gone now and "there is a warning order inside the Pentagon" to prepare for war." The punchline: "There is almost "near certainty" that Netanyahu is "planning an attack [on Iran] ... and it will probably be in September before the vote on a Palestinian state. And he's also hoping to draw the United States into the conflict", Baer explained." For the betting public out there, an September CL call may not be the dumbest trade possible...

All this is real interesting, but here's the real kicker: Economist Nouriel Roubini has tweeted the link to the ZeroHedge story. As long-term EPJ readers know, I consider Roubini the most connected man in finance. He has a small house warming party and George Soros shows up. To ring in the New Year, he shows up at billionaire Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich's New Year's eve party. He gave Larry Summers stock in his company. Within hours of DSK being arrested, he tweeted that Christine Lagarde would take his place--as she has done. He is a consultant to most of the central banks in the world.

I have never seen Roubini tweeting on foreign affairs before, he is unlikely to be tweeting because he finds the story interesting. The story likely falls in line with what he is hearing from his very in the know network.

Sadly, this is a legitimate question right now...

With his poll numbers tanking and his expected donations to date at only 38%, do we see a wag the dog situation forming up? Most certainly it isn’t because it is the right thing to do.

>"are we going to be backing the Iranians?"

Haven't we been since the 70s Carter days, and ever since?

What did we do about it then? Reagan? B1 B2 Billy Jeff & Bridezilla, and now the obvious current.

We should have nuked em then!

Emmyfurs declared WAR on us and we just kept on SLEEPING.

If he were backing the Iranians, wouldn’t the bulk be in the Med? The only considrable reason to be in the Gulf if he were backing the Iraninans would be to protect them.

“he only considrable reason to be in the Gulf if he were backing the Iraninans would be to protect them.”

This isn’t so far fetched!

Anyone else moving into that neighborhood? China, Russia, etc.?

With current deployments holding stable, I would only get interested if the Eisenhower, Vinson and Stennis suddenly deployed. They would be needed to back-fill power projection in other areas of the world while 3 Carriers sustained operations in the Gulf region.

That said, we will not initiate a real battle while we have a Carrier in the Gulf.

It's silly to even sail them up that canal.

At around 0300 (Persian Gulf time) 17 January, along with a blitz by more than 100 TLAMs, wave after wave of coalition aircraft --including those flown by Navy and Marine pilots -- began hammering strategic targets inside both Iraq and Kuwait, signaling the start of offensive combat operations.

Throughout the war, air strikes were conducted from six aircraft carriers operating in the Red Sea and Persian Gulf.

USS America (CV 66) and USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) departed Norfolk 28 December 1990, and arrived just in time for the beginning of DESERT STORM. They joined USS Midway (CV 41), USS Saratoga (CV 60), USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) and USS Ranger (CV 61) who were already on station.

Someone just posted the other day that Iran was moving 20,000 government workers from the capitol, to outlying cities to decentralized. Sounds like war plans to me.

and it will probably be in September before the vote on a Palestinian state

Wouldn't that be a sure-fire way of guaranteeing international support for a Palestinian state?

I don’t think so. I went out to ticket master and tickets for the war aren’t on sale yet.

My opinion too.

ship has just weighed anchor right next to Libya: this is odd since the coast of Tripoli had been left unattended for many weeks by US attack ships

It says first that the ship has "weighed anchor" next to Lybia, then indicates with the next sentence that there have been no ships stationed there before this. If that vessel weighed anchor then it has been there already and is pulling its anchor up to leave. Perhaps the authors are trying to throw in some nautical terms they have heard but think that their meanings don't matter?

It would not surprise me if the US gave Israel the okay then shot down the Israeli aircraft. That would probably solve the whole MidEast mess in the eyes of our Moslem president.

Actually we converged major assets in the area several times in the Bush years and nothing happened. We marched our troops forthrightly up the hill then marched them down again. And again. We really really mean it this time, really!

Any time such an attack is projected for the future I know it will not happen. I will believe it when the news reader says “Iran Four Hours Ago!”
