I had a friend in Massachusetts with "FUBAR" and they refused to renew it one year. The RMV said they had gotten a complaint.
On the other extreme, I used to see a car parked near my wife's work that had an Ohio plate that said, "SMEGMA." How that got approved, I'll never know.
