About twenty years ago, one of the leading “field” volcanologists led a group of scientists into a smoking caldera, where it promptly blew up, killing several and badly injuring many more.

Is that the incident that killed that husband-wife volcano
photographers as well?

About 25 years ago, I did the Rotorua tour, and the they warned us
to stay on the path, "as six months ago, a US geologist that
should have known better, got too close to a mud pit, partially
slipped into it, and is still recovering."

Could have been a scare story, but with a legitimate purpose, though...
