This should be one of the least productive meetings ever held in Washington DC:
President Barack Obama is summoning top Democrats from the House and Senate to the White House Wednesday afternoon for talks on raising the nation’s debt ceiling.
White House spokesman Jay Carney says the meeting will take place shortly before 3 p.m. EDT. When asked why Obama was not meeting with Republicans, Carney would only say there were no other meetings to announce.
I’m certain that the President wants to gather them in the West Wing to review all of their published plans for dealing with deficit reduction and the debt ceiling. But what will they do in the second minute of the meeting?
They’re probably going to discuss how to push the Gang of Six proposal as the solution, even though it won’t be ready until well after the debt-ceiling deadline of August 2nd. Obama insisted last week that he wouldn’t accept an interim debt-ceiling hike, even to get to the “grand bargain” he demanded in his series of press conferences. In fact, The Hill expanded on what the timing would be on the GO-6 bid:
Senate Democratic leaders, for their part, said there is not enough time to combine the group’s plan with a bill to raise the debt ceiling. It could take weeks or even months for the slim framework to be drafted into legislative language and scored by the Congressional Budget Office, sources said.

Hey, before he was afraid that negotiations over the debt ceiling in an election year could make him look bad. Now that he knows the GOP leadership is so inept as to confirm that he looks good relatively, why shouldn’t he want a replay in 2012?
They should tell obama to ROT IN HELL.
The debt ceiling issue right now has nothing to do with entitlements.
Yes we need to drastically reform entitlements, but his trying to create a “grand bargain” is pure bs.

So, the Democrats say Cut Cap & Balance is DOA (which means any Senate Democrats voting not even to bring it up is equivalent of a vote to keep spending). So if they pass something other than Cut Cap & Balance, and send THAT back to the House - then what? If the House stands firm and doesn’t vote on a Senate Gang of 6 plan or anything else, what happens then? Is there no increase in the debt ceiling?

If this is what’s really going on behind the scenes, there will be a stampede of tell-all books.
Such arrogance and contemptuousness doesn’t exactly inspire loyalty from those forced to endure it.

I have always found that fellow’s writing entertaining. Unfortunately, due to his inability to name sources, he needs an addition to all his headlines like to the one that should go above the door of every structure built by an organized religion.

President given briefing by Senate staffer on debt ceiling negotiations. Twice seen rolling eyes and shaking head when Republican positions on subject were mentioned.
–Name deleted- interjected during briefing to convey Senate’s hope that agreement would be made “soon”, as the issue was becoming “politically difficult”. This sentiment was then shared by almost all other members of Congress who were at the table.
Briefing then continued but was cut short by president who then attempted a joke. When staff tried again to continue briefing, president cut them off and instructed them to “Put away the –expletive- paper.” Senator –name withheld- came to staff member’s defense, and leveled direct accusation at president, declaring “White House incompetence” on the debt ceiling issue was putting the party’s chances in 2012 at great risk. President sat silent.
–Name withheld- challenged Senator on accusation of White House incompetence. Declared the president cannot be expected to “babysit” for everyone in Congress. Senator –name withheld- did not back down, threatening to sign off on Republican proposal if White House did not offer up anything “remotely resembling a viable alternative.”
