Head of U.S. Postal Service says delivery could be scaled back to 3 days a week

With Internet usage rising and mail volume steadily falling, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe warned the U.S. Postal Service is going to have to make significant cutbacks that could mean no more Saturday service and eventually lead to mail delivery just three days a week.
The Postal Service's "cashflow crisis is at a critical level," Donahoe told USA Today in an interview published Wednesday. Donahoe said eliminating Saturday mail would save around $3.1 billion a year for the cash-strapped agency, projected to lose $8.3 billion this year.
"At some point, we'll have to move to three" days a week of mail delivery, possibly in 15 years, he told the newspaper.
The steady loss of revenue has prompted the Postal Service to evaluate possible cost-saving measures. Donahoe said the USPS is on track to miss a Sept. 30 payment of $5.5 billion to the U.S. Treasury that would allow the Uncle Sam to "pre-fund retired health benefits" of postal workers.

I think Jefferson envisioned the USPS worker I knew who would sneak into the office on his off day Sunday and work for free to be sure he got the mail out on time on Monday.

Do it NOW. I don’t receive or pay any bills by mail. All I get is catalogs and junk. If any of my relatives want to send me a birthday card, they do it by email.
OK... then we use Fed Ex and move along.
I bet they will still deliver daily if you have a rented box, the only difference though will be the box will cost you three times the cost now, you want service you will have to pay for it.
My dog will get mighty hungry in that time.

I have no complaints. My stuff gets where it’s going, and usually in one piece (if I pack it). UPS is usually more expensive for me (I used to do Ebay—but mostly books, so the book rate by the USPS was often a bargain unless I wanted to insure or it was going overseas). I like home delivery, but I can understand other people not wanting to subsidize it for me. On the other hand, it always only seems to be the pork that benefits me that goes away *cough* Amtrak *cough*... ;) everything else never goes anywhere and I keep paying for it. :)

Remember those faulty stamp vending machines? They musta cost a bundle. Ours was always broken. Repair guys must’ve loved those machines. I went in to get some stamps one day, and it was gone. I wonder how much taxpayer money was lost on that boondoggle?

A good bit of internet bandwidth is currently consumed by Netflix. I don’t have internetz at home presently. Additionally, some DVDs have bonus supplements not viewable in the streamed content and some titles are not even available for streaming. All depends on the content copyright holder.

We got new ones a couple years ago. They take credit cards so I don't have to get stupid Suzies in change. And, they have never failed me yet.
We’re going the wrong way.
When a regular business has solvency problems, it tries to expand service (extra hours etc) to bring in some extra cash flow. Government goes the opposite way.
They need to EXPAND services, but they can’t - the union contracts limit what the workers can do, and they can’t afford to hire more.
I remember being in a post office on Christmas, with a line out the door, with an employee YELLING at the manager because she came out front and was trying to help. His opinion was she should not be coming out and taking union work, and he was going to make a complaint. Meanwhile there were thirty people on line.
