Net Neutrality is forcing grandparents who do nothing more than email their grandchildren to pick up the additional tab for bandwidth hogs like online movie addicts and online gamers.

Oh, and Google.

This monstrous company (with huge profits, yet paying virtually no taxes) use tons and tons of bandwidth – but pushed for Net Neutrality regulations here in the U.S. to make us pay their freight.

But wait, you say. Aren’t they also an "evil corporation?"

First of all, I'm a grandparent, and I do a lot more than email, and there are a lot more of us than you think. We have a daughter in the Air Force stationed in Europe and we have a son in the Marines deployed to Afghanistan, and video chatting is the best thing in the world for our family.

Second, I pay around $65 a month for my service, the top level for home users in my area with my ISP, and I would pay more if they offered me better service, but they don't.

Think about that for a moment - they won't offer a higher tier for so-called bandwidth hogs. Nevermind the fact that as more people get computers with cameras or more TVs are sold that support Netflix out of the box, and as video calling becomes more common place, they aren't willing to make larger tiers for their customers. That should tip you off right there.

Third, if you're upset that "grandparents who do nothing more than email their grandchildren" are footing the tab for bandwidth hogs, then maybe you should get pissed off at the companies who are ripping them off.

Rather than be pissed off at bandwidth hogs, maybe you should get pissed off at the companies that you think are forcing "grandparents who do nothing more than email their grandchildren" to pick up the tab, because obviously you think those "grandparents who do nothing more than email their grandchildren" are getting ripped off.

Finally, these companies do everything they can to ensure that they have government-sanctioned monopolies, and they turn around and all offer similar prices and similar tiers, WHEN you are lucky enough to have 2-3 choices.

I want a free market where we could shop around, but the ISPs have all bought off the politicians and made sure they they don't have to compete in a free market.

And so now we are faced with the prospect of them trying to dictate how we use our internet service.

Because you complained about grandparents getting ripped off, you are obviously not that old, so go out and ask somebody over the age of 50 or 60 what it was like when we had one telephone company and they dictated how you used your telephone and what kind of telephone you got. That's what the ISPs are trying to do.
