With almost 200 million users monthly of the Gmail service alone, there’s no shortage of juicy email content from which Google can serve up a cacophony of those automated “creepy” integrated advertising links in and around your email messages based upon your email habits. When Google launched its Buzz product and automatically opted all of its users IN rather than OUT, the outcry for privacy and data protection was deafening.

Google's continued attempts to capture information is more than creepy...with its leftist slant, it has political implications. Video here is very interesting.

Gmail requires a phone number to send the confirmation text which is absurd. Now google has a record of my phone number so eff it.

Gmail requires a phone number to send the confirmation text...

When did that start?
I added a gmail account less than 2 months ago, and they didn't require it then. I think I had to give them another email address, though.

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoy using Google. It’s not creepy, not invasive. Yes, it does use a bot of some sort to choose ads to place inconspicuously on the gmail page, but they don’t snoop through your mail to do this.

I worked for a couple of years contracted to Google as a web page rater and have a family member who works for Google. Google is exceedingly good at what it does and I’m happy to try whatever services it offers. No complaints with them.

By saying that they don’t snoop, I’m referring to some human peering, leering though one’s email to find stuff. It’s automated and they do respect one’s privacy.

Its a recent thing for all Google related services now, youtube, etc, I guard my accounts like gold now, cause there is no way I am giving them any of my phone numbers to make new ones :(

I was just at an employment law conference and they brought up the gmail issue of google reading all emails that come through it, they flat out tell you that they will.

It had to do with confidentiality statements and proprietary information... if you as the employee email through gmail any work related items, you could be in violation of your confidentiality statement, because in theory, you just shared everything with google.

It was an interesting topic.

The Washington Post reports that under the fine print of the Google Terms of Agreement for Google+ there is a provision that robs photographers of the ability to sell their works if they upload their pictures on the site.

What does this mean exactly? How would one upload a picture to Google and is that different from the images I would find if a did a google image search for German Shephards or something?

Yup for sure that is why we implemented blocks on all external webmail services at where I work, some people would use their own personal webmail accounts to e-mail customers etc., besides looking tacky for a multimillion dollar corporation to be sending e-mails from yahoo or gmail, it was a security risk.
