Fairfax County Police are investigating after a 34-year-old man with a gun was shot and killed in front of his Centreville, Va., home.
The incident happened shortly after 1:30 a.m. in the 6100 block of Kendra Way. Fairfax County Police were called to the home for a disturbance
Once at the scene, Fairfax County Police said the suspect approached them from his ground level garage armed with a gun. They say they told him to drop the weapon, but he refused and shots were fired.

After yelling several times at him, the guy came out of his garage, and they shot him.
When I heard that, I thought "what if he couldn't hear very well, and was coming out to see what they were saying?
I also wondered why police had the right to tell someone to drop their gun when they are in their own house. This news report includes the additional information that there was a police call, which explains why the cops were at his house and looking into his garage.
The man is reported by neighbors to be a marine veteran.
What else are they gonna shoot and kill him with, arrows? Blow guns? Stun guns, maybe. Seriously does the media use editors anymore? I understand what they were trying to convey in as few words as possible, but couldn't they just say, "Man with gun is shot and killed by Police"?
Disturbing as it's written. Apparently you don't have to point a gun at a cop or other person anymore for them to open fire on you. All you have to do is be holding a gun and refuse to put it down.
Do not talk about what you have done or what you are going to do. Thomas Jefferson.
Glad that headline is so clear - I might otherwise have thought the police used a bow, or maybe a spearfishing rig to shoot the man...
“Do not talk about what you have done or what you are going to do. Thomas Jefferson.
Talk about a guy that never took his own advice...
Still, this is Fairfax County so we will all be sending off our non-negotiable demands to fire the officers involved in this one anyway.
It simply doesn't seem to rise to the standard set several weeks back when a crazy guy who was running around stabbing people was shot.
Last thing I want is a killer cop showing up in front of my house ~ just does not happen.
The advice is still sound. No one wants to be in court explaining how defending themselves was justified when the prosecution has reams of internet postings of the defendent saying how they would shoot someone.
Police were called to the home by neighbor Gladys Kravitz.

How would they know he was the owner and not a burglar?
Here is a little local chatter about the incident and the neighborhood.

From WUSA9 ..."I hear this pop! And I could hear someone say 'put your hands up' and then a couple more shots.'...
... Nearly every window of the three story townhome was shattered ...
Uh, Oh, a shot and then put your hands up?

Man Fatally Shot By Police In Centreville
1:33 PM, Jul 21, 2011
“Nearly every window of the three story townhome was shattered. Whatever disturbance was going on, happened before police arrived.
Police received two calls. One from a woman inside the home and a neighbor.”
Thanks.
Someone on there is saying the guy who was shot was also a cop?
I breifly thought that, but they require some level of skill to operate, so being cops, "killed" must mean "gun"
