Sharpton Appears to Win Anchor Spot on MSNBC
New York Times ^ | July 21, 2011 | Brian Seltzer

After giving a nearly six-month tryout for the Internet talk show host Cenk Uygur, the cable news channel MSNBC is preparing to instead hand its 6 p.m. time slot to the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Mr. Sharpton’s imminent hiring, which was acknowledged by three people at the channel on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been signed, is significant in part because MSNBC and other news channels have been criticized for a paucity of minority hosts in prominent time slots. Mr. Sharpton, who is black and is a well-known civil rights activist and radio host, has been guest hosting in the 6 p.m. time slot for the last three weeks.

There had been uncertainty about the 6 p.m. slot ever since the channel’s marquee anchor, Keith Olbermann, departed in January, prompting Ed Schultz to be moved to 10 p.m. from 6. Suddenly Mr. Uygur, who had been made a paid contributor to MSNBC months earlier, was handed 6 p.m., a big coup given that he had earlier campaigned to have his progressive Web show “The Young Turks” picked up by MSNBC.

He earned solid but not stand-out ratings; in late June the channel’s president, Phil Griffin, decided to try out Mr. Sharpton, and offered Mr. Uygur a new contract that included a weekend show, but not a higher-profile weekday show.

Mr. Uygur, who by most accounts was well liked within MSNBC, said in an interview that he turned down the new contract because he felt Mr. Griffin had been the recipient of political pressure. In April, he said, Mr. Griffin “called me into his office and said that he’d been talking to people in Washington, and that they did not like my tone.”

It's a done deal as confirmed by various news sites. It demonstrates just how woeful MSNBC's desperation is in having to scrape beneath the bottom of the barrel to getting the time slot filled with the likes of Sharpton. As if there isn't enough reason to loath MSNBC.

This guy breaks the law, loses a lawsuit that he refuses to pay and gets his own T.V. show. Does anyone doubt this country is on its last legs?

Sharpton is one of the reasons I don’t watch Hannity much anymore. Can’t figure out why he calls this guy his friend and has him on his show to spout his racism. If they’re going to be fair and balanced they should have David Duke on with him.

I have a question:

When Sharpton runs for an elective office shouldn't he step aside from this “news anchor” spot?

Otherwise, he will have unlimited free campaign advertisement in violation of Federal election laws.

Oh, excuse me. I forgot that election laws are only applied to white, conservative males. And as we all know Al Sharpton is a protected sub-species - an Aferican-American (born of two American citizens), liberal/progressive/socialist/dimocrat. there are a few other protected sub-species that he qualifies for but they have politically incorrect hyphenations.

I am not holding my breath when it comes to the 2012 election cycle; I fully expect Al to use his “anchor” on MSNBC as free political fund raising, nation wide.

The wild thing is that, in the article, Cenk Uygur says he thinks the Obamunists pressured his bosses to dump him because he was insufficiently deferential to them.

Whereas MSNBC prez Phil Griffin says Cenk’s aggressive body language and demeanor (i.e. obnoxious behavior) made it hard to book guests.

I couldn’t stand to watch him for more than five minutes, can anyone render an informed opinion here?

If he has a salary coming in can’t the guy who he hasn’t paid sue him for the money?
