The Justice Department's inspector general has opened an investigation into possible retaliation against a whistle-blowing agent at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to two people briefed on the inquiry.
Watchdogs are examining whether anyone at the Justice Department improperly released internal correspondence to try to smear ATF agent John Dodson, who told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee last month that he repeatedly warned supervisors about what he called a reckless law enforcement operation known as "Fast and Furious."
Republican lawmakers in both the House and Senate have spent months pursuing allegations that the ATF may have knowingly allowed assault weapons to enter Mexico in order to try to build bigger criminal cases against violent drug cartels that make use of AK-47s and other American weapons.

Apparently the IG was unsuccessful in his CYA efforts. First one under the bus?
‘Bout damn time.
As far as I can tell so far, out of thousands of guns, there were only two with GPS trackers. The ATF folks watched one of them go into Mexico until it got out of range or batteries. I have not heard anything about the other one.
Even if they all had GPS devices, what is the point? Eventually batteries die. So you can show that guns smuggled into Mexico were in certain places at certain times.
The ATF was not cooperating with any Mexican authorities, and they had no jurisdiction to investigate in Mexico.
“However the wimpy Republicans refuse to expose this administration with the ammunition that is handed to them.”
Some of them probably have a hand in this mess.
Dodson has been put in front of the cameras. It is not "wimpy Republicans" that are the problem. I learned that in 1995. The Republicans were making great speeches, they would have carried the day if the public had heard them. The MSM just didn't carry them.
That is what we are up against. The MSM has ruled as a Mediacracy by deciding what is important and what the public needs to know. With the new media, they no longer have nearly complete control over the dissemination of the news.
The struggle that we are involved in is a great contest to see if there is enough new media to create a majority that the MSM will not be able to fool.
Wait a minute are they looking into why the whistle blower was fired after testifying before congress? I’ll have to read the entire article but I don’t see his name.
Republican lawmakers (blah blah blah) ATF may have knowingly allowed assault weapons to enter Mexico in order to try to build bigger criminal cases against violent drug cartels that make use of AK-47s and other American weapons. And sure as the sun rises in the East I looked and found what I already KNEW: by Carrie Johnson
First, as FReepers all know an AK-47 isn't an 'American Weapon', though our Spec Ops guys do use them on some missions, but that's another topic and irrelevant here. Second, what's being 'smuggled' (/s) in Gunwalker aren't "Assault" weapons. They're semi-auto versions of REAL "Assault" weapons.
Now I used to joke that it has to be a Union Rule that all articles that have a 'gun' in it must be written by an ignorant gun hating leftist *w*itch. Well, the joke's over as these ignoramuses are spreading outright lies and I believe intentionally poisoning the minds of the younger generation that 'All Guns Are Evil'.
That being said, if they are just plain STOO-PID™, then screw the p.c. BS, and make them stick to writing about Cake recipes, their favorite Detergent, and the latest in Dishwashers!
Look at the bright side. Ditz-ettes will be forced to pay attention to the case.
There are a lot of people who love to read what the Ditz-ettes write.
May I count upon you two for a contribution to the 501-3c that I am organizing to prevent the sale of automatic revolvers at gun shows and trailer park bake sales? I am all for the American hunter keeping a rifle for bird hunting, though. (Providing of course that no lead shot that might harm the environment for the women,+ children, gays and lesbians, minority groups, the handicapped, and the transgendered. I am also worried about endangered species!)
May I count upon you two for a contribution to the 501-3c that I am organizing to prevent the sale of automatic revolvers at gun shows and trailer park bake sales?Gee. I'd like to but I gave my last Dollar to FR in the current FReepathon.
However I do share your concern as I've *heard on the street* that there's a rush on by gang-bangers Renegade Mennonites to buy old Webley-Fosbery Self-Cocking Automatic Revolvers. In the six shot .455 Caliber version of course. (why do the Brits always make firearms that need odd size ammo?)
Though I also hear that getting ammo is a bit of a problem since the 'Webley Automatic' hasn't been made since 1915 ;-)
I have an 'older' friend whose from England and he has one of those 'Webley .455s'. It was handed down to him from his grandfather who was in WWI. But he hasn't any .455 ammo for it and he can't find it anywhere.
Yep. They have been flailing around looking for the next show/soap opera trial to soak up 4 networks airtime with. The last one didn't get them over the hump (they expected this story to die, even though it has been unfolding for months).
The OJ trial provided a similar smokescreen for the Clinton DOJ and the BATF during the Congressional Hearings on Waco and Ruby Ridge, while the hearings were only available on C-SPAN starting sometime between 5 pm and midnight....(after the conclusion of House Business), and then only parts were televised. You couldn't even set the VCR timer with an 8 hour tape and be assured of getting what was there, you had to stay up.
That was never more evident than in the first two hours of the Waco Hearings as carried by CNN.
There was a five-minute rule imposed (each side of the aisle got to speechify/ask questions/whatever, for five minutes, and then handed off to the other party). CNN carried five minutes of Democrat (Schumer) spew, and cut to commercial for five minutes, then five more minutes of Democrat spew, then five more minutes of commercial. After two hours, one hour of Schumer, et. al., and one hour of commercials, they cut away to 'commentary', and did not carry the rest of the hearings.
It took about 20 minutes for me to realize I wasn't getting the whole story and go channel hopping for better coverage--and I found that on C-SPAN, where (for a while) I at least got to hear the Republicans speak.
I'd bounce back to CNN from time to time and find the Republicans still buried in the commercial breaks.
I haven't watched CNN since (except to catch Lou Dobbs late at night once in a while when he was there, questioning the trade deficit with China), but that was the real eye-opener for me.
In contrast with what is happening on the news with Gunwalker, the Watergate hearings dominated the networks in the DC area, taking up almost all of the broadcasting day.
This should be front page, above the fold, headline news all over, but the blackout is on.
Waiting for the FBI to start whistle blowing .. or being punished for telling what happened.
But I am not holding my breath.
