Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart on Friday announced misdemeanor citations for 40 purchasers of fake IDs shipped from China.
The charges follow a months-long investigation into counterfeit driver’s licenses purchased online from China, Dart said during a Friday news conference.
"These are incredibly high-quality fakes," Dart said Friday. "Even for the experts, they're unnerved by it as well."
More than 1,700 fake licenses have been intercepted locally this year. The licenses apparently were being ordered online from China and arrived in packages of anywhere from two IDs to 48.
Those charged are between 17 and 20 years old and live in the northwest suburbs, Dart said. Some attend a local high school, though most are in college.
They could have faced felony charges, but the sheriff's office chose to intercept the IDs and give misdemeanor citations, which come with 25 hours of community service and fines.
Dart on Friday warned other young adults thinking of ordering IDs that exposing their personal information "is sort of a financial manipulator's dream come true."
It can easily lead to identity theft, he said.

When my daughter was in college (circa 2002) there were kids on campus who could print you a drivers license for any of the 50 states.
Because the pest terminator was not called the evil eavils have permeated the pantry!
Fake Social Security cards and Green cards are ok though.
No worries for those folks.
What is not said is that the Chinese willing to pay premium prices for these IDs are wealthy Chinese, desperate to get out of China before it collapses, and hopefully with their fortunes before they are confiscated by the Chinese government.
Heaven knows how many are fleeing to other countries so that they will at least be out of China, and can try to make it to the US later.

some kids around here got busted when they tried to buy beer with their fake Chinese Pennsylvania Drivers License and the clerk noticed one kid’s height was listed as 58 ft. tall
These kids must have forgot to register as DemoRats before sending for their IDs.

Even a few years ago, these were made by American college kids looking to give the finger to our stupid drinking laws.
Now, even this industry is taking a hit from the Chinese
