Profits at the world's biggest software maker climbed to $5.87bn (£3.6bn) for the past three months, a 30pc increase on the same period last year. Revenues rose 8pc to $17.4bn, topping Wall Street's expectations.
It was Microsoft's business division, which includes the Office set of software, that again delivered the growth.
Microsoft had business spending to thank for a rise in profits in a quarter that saw consumers abandon personal computers in greater numbers.
Sales of the Windows operating system, which comes pre-installed on most of the PCs sold in the world, edged slightly lower in the quarter.

Despite the erosion of the PC (desktop/laptop) market, Microsoft chalked up a sales record and great profits, due to the MS-Office Suite.
As a daily Windows user, it's nice to know that the Behemoth of Redmond is still around and looks to be around for a while yet.

Making people buy a whole copy fresh might be a revenue enhancer, but it also will make more people think about OpenOffice. Been there, done that -- it works for lightweight stuff but complex documents and spreadsheets, not so much.
Good thing for Open Office.
Yes, the demise of the PC has been greatly exaggerated. It’s slowed down its growth, but it’s still a growing market. And it’s incredibly mature as well - tablets are still a very new market, and it’s not certain if they’ll be a viable long-term market, or merely a passing fad. PCs, though, are here to stay for at least a few more decades.
As far as MS’s profits go - a 30% jump is massive. They’ve got a monster profit margin, somewhere around 34%. That’s just huge - they keep 1 out of 3 dollars of revenue. THAT is a sticky cash business!
They went to a full cost version (with media and 2 licenses), and a license-only version (where you need to download the install image). License-only version is about the same cost as the old upgrade path.
We’re still using Office 2003 and the upgrades are more than enough to do the job. The only really new software we have is Photoshop CS5, which is primarily used by our graphic design people here in Hollywood as our clients are in the “biz”.
The funny part is that the pre-teen daughter of our founder is a wiz at it, she makes gif banners as she is an anime fan. Grown men even ask her to do some for them personally LOL

Like you, I still use Office 2000, one of the best software packages ever developed by MS. I have a licensed version of 2010 (gift from family), but I do most of my work in 2000.
I use 2000 not so much because I’m familiar with it; I just find it easer and more intuitive then 2010. I think that MS went overboard with their office software after 2000, to many unneeded bells a whistles (typical MS).
