Aside from some naturally generated methane, there shouldn’t have been anything that dangerous. Unless someone dumped something in there...(gasoline, for instance).

I remember an article in the Chicago Tribune several years ago where a pastor of a southern church saw a rattlesnake craw under an outhouse in a public campground.

He poured gasoline into the pit to drive the snake out.

When he didn't see the snake come out, he lit a match above the seat to see if he could see the snake inside.

The outhouse landed a few blocks away and the man was critically burned. There was no mention of what may happened to the snake.
