Some Republicans push back against Boehner's plan to raise debt limit
CBS News ^ | Lucy Madison

In a statement Monday afternoon, Republican Study Committee Chairman Jim Jordan said he opposed the Boehner plan, and that "only a Balanced Budget Amendment will actually solve our debt problems."

"Both plans represent typical Washington answers to the federal government's out-of-control spending problem," Lee said in a statement, referring both to Boehner's plan and a Democratic proposal released by Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid on Monday. "They add trillions to the national debt in the short-term while making hollow promises to cut spending in the long-term. Neither of the proposals fundamentally reform the way Washington spends money, require the federal government to balance its budget, or protect our triple-A credit rating."

I see many freepers are excited about Boehner's speech. Too bad he doesn't believe anything he said. If he did he wouldn't have laid out such a crappy plan. How many cuts will take place next year? What will be cut? Boehner talked a good game, but on policy, when we're facing 100 trillion in unfunded liabilities, he's Obama light.

How do you play a good game when you don’t win anything? Redstate is reporting that next year’s cuts will be only 25 billion! Twenty-five billion for a 1 trillion hike in the debt limit?

We are in dire need of a paradign shift. We’re not even remotely near the level of cuts that we need to be at. Jim Demint and Jim Jordan oppose this plan for a reason.

It can get confusing keeping up....

but if it’s only a trillion cut...and that over a period of time...how can they say this would in any wise hurt the economy when we’re looking at a whopping 14 trillion dollar debt that will be 25 trillion in ten years?

Why is this simply not getting me excited? It’s like getting a loan for a trillion but it’s going to cost you ten to take it out.

The balanced budget amendment is a mistake. The only thing that will stop increasing debt is to not raise the debt ceiling.

A balanced budget amendment will end up giving cover for raising taxes. And if they don’t someone will sue, and the supreme court will raise taxes, since the balanced budget amendment would require a balanced budget, and every time a court is given a law that mandates a level of spending, they always solve the problem with tax increases.

Agreed. Boehner lost me when he said Americans would not accept an increase in the debt ceiling without making spending cuts. How about, Americans will not accept an increase in the debt ceiling ... period. Why on earth should the credit limit be raised when the cardholder is as irresponsible as the current boneheaded administration. I give Boehner credit for not caving, but that's it. He is still acting like the typical establishment republican kicking the can down the road for the benefit of his cronies despite the will of We the People. Spend less, Boehner, and you don't have to raise the debit limit. Wise up.

Best game I can remember seeing actually.

Unfortunately for the country, there is no time for games anymore. Without stopping the raising of the debt ceiling, this whole exercise is pointless. We will be Greece.

I have been extremely preoccupied lately. did I miss something? I was under the impression that no actual agreement has even been reached. Last thing I heard was that Boehner had walked out of the talks and stated that the deal was off because Obama “moved the goal posts”. He has repeatedly stated his commitment to shrinking the federal government through spending cuts. He reaffirmed that commitment tonight. He hasn’t folded his cards from what I have seen. unless I missed something like I said.

Obama will never go for the spending cuts though so he might as well be saying “Americans will not accept an increase in the debt ceiling... period”. That’s just a small part of the brilliance of his game IMO. He can’t just say FU to the President, he has to play the game and he’s playing it well so far. Thing is, this game is just getting interesting and it’s going to get more and more interesting with each passing day as the stakes get higher and higher. I’ll say it again, it’s the best DC poker game I have ever watched. This is going to be one for the history books.

Balanced budget won’t make it unless you also have a plan to pay down the principal in increments over time.

He is not negotiating with Obummer, but he is with Reid. There is no clarity on what exactly is being proposed, but it isn’t Cut Cap and Balance. Boner stated that this afternoon. It is a lesser version of that so that it is palatable to Reid, i.e.; back loaded cuts. From what DeMint and others are saying it will equal 25 billion in cuts next year for a 1 Trillion raise in the ceiling. That is almost a waste of time in my book.

I’m amazed nobody ever mentions that the current spending levels entail $1.5T deficit each year. So when talking about total cuts over a 10 year period, if we just balanced the budget, we’d expect at least $15T in cuts, right ? Not $1.3T, $2.7T, not the S&P demand of $4T, or the Erskin Bowles $6T ... but $15T in cuts to live within our means.

That’s how you know NONE of them really GET IT.

A few dozen hill staffers posting and spinning does not make public opinion. The plan is bilge and more of the same old same old. The debt goes up and the future unnamed cuts never happen.

I have to agree with you completely.

What the concerned US taxpayer-parent-grandparent is witnessing is another feint.

The budget issue is a cover for something else, most likely removing the heat off the Fed for the $16 trillion in bailouts.

I seriously doubt the average American realizes the level of bloat and corruption that exists in the Fed, Wall St., the US Congress and goobermint as a whole.

Nothing concrete has been shown at the start of all this, i.e. immediate tax cuts in amounts and which programs, departments agencies.

Like $8 / loaf bread?

Coming very soon to your local grocer.
