I have a friend who was on board a California National Guard helicopter that took off from San Diego, took an incorrect bearing in clouds, then had an "Oh, (expletive deleted)" moment, when the clouds cleared, and they saw that the road down below them wasn't IH-5.
Nobody was court martialed, but doing something that causes your state Adjutant General to have to apologize to the Pentagon, because the Pentagon had to apologize the the State Department, because the State Department had to apologize to Mexico, is not calculated to enhance your prospects of promotion.
