A Senate committee listened Tuesday to the pros and cons of expanding Maryland's sales tax base to include more services, as well as goods purchased over the Internet.
The Senate Budget and Taxation Committee spent the day in Annapolis receiving briefings on taxes, the federal debt ceiling, education funding and toll increases. Legislative committees meet occasionally between the 90-day General Assembly sessions.
Tangible products, but few services, sold by Maryland retailers are taxed at 6 percent. This year, the sales tax is predicted to generate $4.2 billion, about 30 percent of the state's general fund revenue, according to the Department of Legislative Services.
Legislative Services analysts prepared a chart to show how much added revenue the state could make by taxing engineering services, cable television, auto repair, golf and other sales. If the state imposed a 6 percent tax on those and a dozen other services, it could take in at least $1 billion more each year, the department estimated.
Taxing goods purchased over the Internet — remote sales — would bring Maryland $184 million annually, a University of Tennessee study cited by Legislative Services showed. But instituting an Internet sales tax would be far more complicated than an expansion to services, possibly requiring federal approval.
Members of the Senate committee said they are not considering an expansion of the sales tax base at this time, but they spent more than two hours on the topic at a hearing in Annapolis.
"This is just a discussion," said Sen. James E. DeGrange Sr., an Anne Arundel Democrat on the committee. "There's nothing being considered. We're just here to hear comments."

Total BS.. if they’re listening, they’re thinking if they are thinking then they’ll be raising taxes. Maryland sucks.. ranks 50th in Personal Freedoms and full of liberal azzholes.
I just found out my job is leaving MD and moving to GA or TX. I am so sick of this state and it’s f/u liberals who run it. Good Riddance!!!

Taxes went down 3%. On our new home, roughly the same value, property taxes went down 25%. Gasoline was 10% less and the fresh food from Florida ... Yum.
It was like getting a huge bonus which allowed us to put all our kids through college debt free with no residual loans for us.
We kept on the Dave Ramsey plan (popular here) and, all praise be to God, paid off the home September of '08.
Not only this, but our son, after being told he would never go to college by the MD teachers. Went to ROTC here and then to a Military College and is going up like a rocket.
It was the best move we ever did and are still counting the blessings.
We only have a year left in this God-forsaken state. For those who have never experienced this place, it is THE Freak state on so many levels: taxes, illegals, feral yutes, LIBs and other assorted moonbat asshats..
That's right, they've already decided to raise taxes in a bad economy. It will cause more businesses to flee, more people on the welfare rolls and unemployment to rise. Revenues may actually go down instead of up.
But do these Politicians consider this? Naught!
It comes with the Liberal/Democratic mindset and notice the other baggage that is coming too. Gay Marriage and loss of free speech is sure to follow.
I have only one word for those in the Liberal dominated states: FLEE!
They will soon be extremely unhealthy for families.
They think that they can do this because the maryland economy prospers by sucking on the Federal teat.
The day of reckoning is fast approaching, though!
Maryland is a physically beautiful state (outside the urban areas). Beaches, mountains, forests, farms, four seasons. Perfect for boating, motorcycle riding, etc.
But the politics as well as the FSA around here stink.

just moved out of the People’s Republic of Montgomery County and never looked back. I read an interesting article in the local Gazette that summed up doing business in Maryland. A business person that wanted to build a construct a new building for her business and move her operations to our area was interviewed and, i’m paraphrasing here, that if she knew it was going to be this difficult and cost this much, I would not have done it. They hit her with a few hundred thousand in “impact fees” as well as taxes. How is a locally owned small business going to make up that money?
That state is being run by Montgomery, Baltimore and PG county democrats and the gov is now starting to complain about how republicans in VA are voting to cut back the federal govt, which would kill his state because most of the people in those areas work for the fed govt.
They’re doomed if they don’t get smart, real fast.
I agree. However, wherever they are massed the LIBs and other miscreants tarnish the appeal considerably.
