They are often hailed as an essential component of modern life. But smartphones are taking over some people's lives, according to a study that has identified repetitive and obsessive use of the devices. Scientists have uncovered what they call 'checking habits', when users frequently look at the menu screen, news, email, contacts, and social applications on the device. A typical checking lasts less than 30 seconds and involves opening the screen lock and accessing a single application. The researchers, from Helsinki Institute for Information Technology, were surprised to find users engaging in checking behaviours throughout the waking hours.

Yikes - I think I see myself in this thread. I love being able to read FR wherever I am...Angry Birds is fun, but I have replaced it with an obsession with “Words with Friends.” I’m Aberaussie on there too, if you want to play.
I just don’t need all the crap on a phone. My tracphone has a camera but I’ve never used it. The only reason it has a cam is because i couldn’t find one without.
I don't check email. I don't twitter or facebook with it. At the time of the purchase a phone and data plan would have cost $60 a month and I thought about whether checking internet stuff while on the go was worth it or not and after thinking about it I did not want to become obsessed with the internet that much. The few times I have used the iphone for internet stuff I found the screen too small to be useful so it was a good move to say no.
We all have our obsessions. I am incessantly working on my website. :)

Don’t bother texting me as my cell is only turned on twice a month and I’m not signed up for texts.
Can’t stand people who are constantly on their cells. Text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text. Hey, you’ve got a bleepin’ phone in your hand, dial up the person already and say what you have to say, then welcome back to the real live world.
I check my smart phone regularly, but I don’t check my scientists more than once a month or so.
I don't respond to every ding and ring on mine immediately and tend to turn the sound off when visiting with friends or family or out at a social event.
They're convenient, but I won't allow that thing to be a leash. Face-to-face interaction takes precedence over the beeping and dinging gadget that seems to be always trying to interrupt.
I see so much of that now.
People don't want to communicate face to face anymore.
They want to communicate via the gadget.
I keep thinking it’ll pass. That one day we’ll look back and laugh that people spent so much time typing on their phones. I think I’m wrong.
just wire an interface into the cerebral cortex and be done with it
Being retired we often entertain friends and neighbors as we have the time and enjoyed the constant flow of both drop ins and invited guests. We have started to avoid some of them because of their addiction to texting and the constant monitoring of their devices during what should be conversation and interaction. Why else would they be visiting?
Some of them are so addicted that they won’t even respond to their name being called out when they are so absorbed in concentrating on their device. These are retired folks mostly. I’m sure kids are even worse.
