Ark. commission considers shutting down wells
Fuel Fix ^ | July 27, 2011 | Associated Press

The Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission is hearing testimony as it considers shutting down an Oklahoma company’s natural gas drilling disposal well and banning new wells in central Arkansas where hundreds of small earthquakes have occurred.

...

The wells are used to dispose of waste water that’s the result of extracting natural gas from the ground.

Note: Only the disposal wells are being considered for shutting down.

Natural Gas and Oil Drilling can continue and hydraulic fracturing can continue. But the disposal of the hydro-fracturing fluid could get more expensive. Some other areas already process and recycle it to use at new wells. This may happen here.

The ignorance it takes to believe that any amount of whatever pumped into the ground can cause EARTHQUAKES is staggering! These people REALLY have NO IDEA of the scale of forces involved.

Just wow.

I would rather have the production well over a disposal well in my yard.

You are not going to get royalties paid on what goes into the ground.

Actually - you are ignorant of some facts. At least two separate projects to inject fluid into Geothermal hot spots have been abandoned because of quakes that were created.

As well as disposal of liquid nerve agent waste at The Rocky Mountain Arsenal: “The Army discontinued use of the well in February 1966 because the fluid injection may have triggered a series of earthquakes in the area”.

Depends on the lease.

If you own the minerals under the property where the well is located and it’s a commercial disposal well or is used for off lease production disposal you will.

These wells were used for disposal of hydraulic fracturing fluids.

I am trying to understand how a lease holder would get paid on injection of fluids into a disposal well. I understand the surface payments for the property use, but how are royalties involved in a disposal well?

A little more research and I answered my own question.

As a landowner you may receive an up front payment for leasing your land to a saltwater disposal company, as well as a per barrel royalty for all saltwater injected into the rock stratas deep under your land.

Not exactly royalty but effectively the same.

Thanks for pointing it out.

Most leases only allow for the disposal of fluid produced on the lease itself or from other properties owned by both the mineral owner and the lease owner. The lease owner has several different properties leased from the same mineral owner.

Pump salt water out of one well on the lease, you can pump it back down another disposal well on the same lease.

If you lease your property for a disposal well, be it a commercial well or a disposal well used by the lease owner for disposal of fluids from their leases but different mineral owners, you would get paid for every barrel of fluid pumped in the ground from these other leases.

You can make a whole lot of money from a disposal well.

The problem is getting permitted for disposal of anything other than plain ol salt water from production.
