Around 10:52 am, the news emerged from Capitol Hill that Republicans were planning to change the controversial Boehner spending-cut bill, and call a floor vote some time today. There was speculation that House leaders were planning to cut funding for Pell Grants—needed financial aid for college students—in order to win the support of Tea Party radicals.

Gee, the Department of Education only costs us $20 billion per MONTH ($240B per year BEFORE any baseline budgeting additions and multipliers). Do you really think we would want to cut any funding for Pell Grants and other education expenditures? They’ve used their money so wisely since the Department of Ed came into existence (what) 40-50 years ago. Surely, this is a Department that should be spared any draconian cuts, right? /sarc
Student loans have to be one of the biggest scams in American history.

Nonsense. After active duty, I went to college on the GI Bill in the late ‘60s and early 70’s while serving in the reserves. It covered tuition at a small state college and that was about it. I worked as a waiter, construction, life guard, and sold shoes. It took me 6 years of half fulltime and half part time attendance to earn my BS/BA degree . I didn’t take out loans, I didn’t borrow a dime from anyone. I’m thankful Uncle Sam cared enough about veterans to give us a hand, but really, sister, I don’t need a lecture on the challenges involved in pursuing an education.
Tuition: In 1988, the average tuition and fees for a four-year public university rang in at about $2,800, adjusted for inflation. By 2008, that number had climbed about 130% to roughly $6,500 a year — and that doesn’t include books or room and board.
Income: If incomes had kept up with surging college costs, the typical American would be earning $77,000 a year. But in reality, it’s nowhere near that.
In 2008 — the latest data available — the median income was $33,000. That means if you adjust for inflation, Americans in the middle actually earned $400 less than they did in 1988. (Read: How the middle class became the underclass).
Financial aid: Meanwhile, the amount of federal aid available to individual students has also failed to keep up. Since 1992, the maximum available through government-subsidized student loans has remained at $23,000 for a four-year degree.
“There does seem to be this growing disparity between income and the cost of higher education,” said Justin Draeger, president of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. “At the same time, there’s been a fundamental shift, moving away from public subsidization, to individuals bearing more of the cost of higher education.”
Facing that disparity, it’s no wonder then that two other trends have emerged: Families are taking on unprecedented levels of debt or downgrading their child’s education from a four-year, to a two-year, degree to cut costs.

Things are different today.
Eliminate the provision that prevents student loan debt from being cancelled in bankruptcy, and make colleges finance a percentage of the student loan amounts, and you will see colleges and lenders stop giving student loans to people who will never economically benefit from a college degree (at least one in their declared major).
Only to the extent that people expect their goals to be met before they have the ability to pay for them. Whatever happened to pay as you go? Once upon a time, that was a traditional value.
You would be amazed at how many fines at the courts are being paid by the tuition money from the government when it is received. I then wonder if the individuals enter school.

Community college is still relatively inexpensive with pick and choose courses.
And what does that have to do with Pell grants?
Your daughter received scholarships, sought student loans, and worked. That is not the Pell grant path. That is a whole different ballgame. No one is holier than thou about your daughters work.
No more Pell grants. Oh no that means likely no more studies on the mating habits of the flea. This cannot stand.
One gal with four kids and a nutcase for a husband was taken under the wing of a couple (conservative)in our church. They helped her get a GED and took her to a community college to speak with a counselor, introduced her to he Pell Grant program. From then on she took off, good grades, on to nearby university for a BS and today is a highly regarded nurse. Her husband is still a leech.
you are right I would be amazed if Pell Grant money is used to pay fines.
How do they justify these large administrative staffs?? I understand that some are needed to handle all the state and federal programs mandated. Some are needed in personnel work. But these administrative offices have huge staffs. These jobs all need to be reviewed by a good industrial engineer to weed out, consolidate and balance salaries to actual work performed.

I was extremely distressed and shocked to heaer Rush talking about the strong-arm tactics being used against Jim Jordan in Ohio! The GOP threatened to redistrict and basically end his district if he didn’t “Get his ass in line.” Wow.
Also heard that 4 no votes had originally voted yes, but turned because Boehner did not need them. Geez...more sleazzzzzzy tactics. You know, I really thot we were the good guys. Not anymore :(
I think Boehner intentionally sold us up the river and Mark Levin seemed to confirm this on radio as well Rush. Now Reid has a bill to “tweak” and then send back to House. It will be more spending and few cuts centuries out. I am so anggggrrry and saddened for my children!!!!!!!!!
Perhaps the program has changed, but I agree, Pell grants have changed many lives—including my husband’s ;)
He used it for his B.S.—now he has PhD and we have put 3 thru college with no student loans tho they did get merit scholarships or academic scholarships.
1 is working on PhD, another, finished M.S. and working for major tech firm doing wonderfully., and one 3rd year of B.S. in nursing...
