Internet providers would be forced to keep logs of their customers' activities for one year--in case police want to review them in the future--under legislation that a U.S. House of Representatives committee approved today.

...

A last-minute rewrite of the bill expands the information that commercial Internet providers are required to store to include customers' names, addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, and temporarily-assigned IP addresses, some committee members suggested. By a 7-16 vote, the panel rejected an amendment that would have clarified that only IP addresses must be stored.

TOPICS: Business/Economy; Culture/Society
KEYWORDS: economy; internet; mafiaacorruption; organizedcrime; police; privacy; socialworkers
Voting for: Lamar Smith, Howard Coble, Elton Gallegly, Bob Goodlatte, Dan Lungren, Steve Chabot, Randy Forbes, Steve King, Trent Franks, Tim Griffin, Thomas Marino, Trey Gowdy, Dennis Ross, Sandy Adams, Howard Berman, Sheila Jackson Lee, Pedro Pierluisi, Mike Quigley, Ted Deutch (14R, 5D)

Just damn them. This is as big an issue as the debt ceiling.

Never thought I'd agree with John Conyers: "The bill is mislabeled," said Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, the senior Democrat on the panel. "This is not protecting children from Internet pornography. It's creating a database for everybody in this country for a lot of other purposes."

I can’t imagine that I’ve ever been on the same side of any issue with Conyers before, and I haven’t read the actual text of the bill, but chances are good that I disapprove of this bill too...

Political sleight of hand is always dangerous. Even more dangerous in the times we live in, with this “leadership” in the White House.

Watch what the other hand is doing...

Why the heck should an ISP keep track of CC#’s or bank account numbers for even a minute?

Ridiculous.

Bank account numbers? Looks like the hackers have their new targets... Not to mention the environment the ISPs will have to set up to protect them. PCI regulations.... no fun.

I see no reason why the following should be re-elected:

Lamar Smith (R,TX)
Howard Coble (R,NC)
Elton Gallegly (R,CA)
Bob Goodlatte (R,VA)
Dan Lungren (R,CA)
Steve Chabot (R,OH)
Randy Forbes (R,VA)
Steve King (R,IO)
Trent Franks (R,AZ)
Tim Griffin (R,AR)
Thomas Marino (R,PA)
Trey Gowdy (R,SC)
Dennis Ross (R,FL)
Sandy Adams (R,FL)

I don’t care what they’ve done on abortion, balanced budget amendment, or presidential proof of citizenship: their vote on this issue proves them unfit for office.

Nearly all Republicans, and they voted in favor of your local government offices (mainly) being able to get that information on you. When will politicos learn that both political parties are full of socialists paid by the various levels of government?
