Upgrade your browser - the more intelligent option

Results from an online IQ test taken by over 100,000 people have been reported as indicating the users of Internet Explorer have low IQ and have provoked some IE users to threaten legal action. But the study's findings are valuable ammunition for web developers.

A Canadian company that designs, validates and publishes psychometric tests for recruitment, career guidance and staff development, released its report Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and Browser Usage and found itself at the centre of a storm.

The survey findings were reported by Jared Newman on PC World with the headline "Internet Explorer Users Are Kinda Stupid" and as his story spread AptiQuant started to receive hate mail from IE users.

In an attempt to defuse the situation Leonard Howard, AptiQuant's founder and CEO said,

"I just want to make it clear that the report released by my company did not suggest that if you use IE that means you have a low IQ, but what it really says is that if you have a low IQ then there are high chances that you use Internet Explorer."

And if a quick look at the chart below shows that this is indeed the case. There are three clusters - a below average one comprising all the versions of IE, one that is slightly above average comprising Firefox, Chrome and Safari, and a final one that is again significantly better with three minority browser choices, IE with Chrome Frame, Camino and Opera.

I've used Opera for years and have used Firefox too. Past iterations of Opera have had trouble with some web sites. Also, Netflix doesn't work with Opera.

I've thought I was dumb because the latest version of IE is so difficult for me to use.

i’ve used firefox for years, altho’ i have ie and chrome available.

the latest editions of firefox 5 and 6 do not properly install.

opening a second window results in a window with two task bars and no google to type into.

fragments of previous windows remain on the desktop.

previous editions of firefox did not do this.

Thanks for a feel good story. I have never used IE. I’ve even tried to have it removed from my computer, but people technically more advanced that I am have said they couldn’t do that. I use Firefox. No complaints.

I was an IE user for years.

The first step was admitting that I had a problem.

I’ve been using Firefox 5.0 (Windows 7) with no problem. I have IE because it’s integrated, and only use it when I’m testing a new web page. Firefox has been my browser of choice for some years. No plans to change.

Install? On what platform? I am running Firefox 5 on Xubuntu 11.04 and it works fine. Have had one upgrade on it since the system was installed and I like it like all the other Firefox versions I have used. Have been using Firefox since the first Windows version came out. Seldom use Windows though.

That is odd. I am using Firefox 5 in Windows 7, having no problems. Seems to be working very good.

Right....

Just like the studies that show FoxNews and Rush listeners are more stupid than the enlightened.

IE is the most commonly used browser so you’ll find all kinds of users using it.

Internet Explorer 9 is now available for Windows 7 users.

It’s great. Check it out:

Are you asking why people don’t use IE?

I have the same problem. It’s nothing more than a minor nuisance, no big deal, but it’s definitely a glitch with this version of Firefox.

Sigh...what a crock. The 'Browser War' has always been about the players leap frogging each other with features, speed and security.

With Internet Explorer you usually see the most stability, with Firefox speed and some new features and Chrome with spying on you (lol).

These always change when new versions are released.

No...I use it because it’s all I am familiar with. My computer is an HP Vista. I am not familiar with why others use other browsers though I’ve heard the names used.

What is the purpose of using other browsers...do they do something IE doesn’t?

Internet Explorer 9 is now available for Windows 7 users.

And, let's not forget the most awesome part of Internet Explorer 9: World's Biggest Pac-Man
