New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) The construction of the first indigenous aircraft carrier ''Air Defence Ship'' at Cochin is scheduled to be completed by December after which the 40,000 tonne vessel will be launched, the Lok Sabha was informed."Regarding the ADS being constructed at the Cochin Shipyard limited (CSL), 75 per cent of hull work has been completed and is expected to be launched in December 2011, after which further work will be undertaken prior to its commissioning," Defence Minister A K Antony said yesterday in reply to a query. He said Indian-made warship quality steel was now available in the country, which will reduce the country''s dependence on foreign sources."With the infrastructure and experience, indigenous aircraft carrier-sized ships can be built at CSL. Now Indian-manufactured warship quality steel is available, which will reduce dependence on foreign countries," he said.Outlining India''s plans to have an aircraft carrier on both the seaboards, the minister said, "To maintain effective presence in our area of interest, IN should be capable of deploying Carrier Task Forces in two geographically separated locations." Commenting on the work on the Admiral Gorshkov project in Russia, Antony said, "The refit and modernisation works on board the INS Vikramaditya are progressing in an earnest manner." "Consequent to signing of supplementary agreements in March 2010, the Russian side has increased the manpower and material resources considerably for the project. A majority of the equipment and systems have been installed on board the ship. The delivery of the ship is scheduled in December 2012," he said.

This is a STOBAR carrier. No CATS. Those are MIG-29Ks, bought from Russia.

The Indians are going to have three large, new carriers soon. One is the refit of an older Russsian carrier, the other two will be their own indegenous ones...this being the first.

Little to worry about nations with carriers. Aircraft carriers are sitting ducks as stand alone ships.

Aircraft carriers are typically treated as the capital ship of a fleet and are extremely expensive to build and important to protect. When an aircraft carrier deploys, it takes a Strike Group, made up of several other warships and supply vessels which allow the operation to be carried out. The armament of the Nimitz class is made up only of short range, defensive weapons, used as a last line of defense against enemy missiles and aircraft. The other vessels in the Strike Group provide additional capabilities, such as long range Tomahawk missiles or the Aegis Combat System, and also protect the carrier from attack. A typical Strike Group may include, in addition to an aircraft carrier: up to around six surface combatants, including frigates, guided missile cruisers and guided missile destroyers (used primarily for anti-aircraft warfare and anti-submarine warfare); one or two attack submarines (for seeking out and destroying hostile surface ships and submarines); and an ammunition, oiler, and supply ship of Military Sealift Command to provide logistical support.[ The precise structure, and numbers of each type of ship, can vary between groups, however, depending on the objectives of the deployment (from various sources)

The US will have Naval superiority for the next 50 years

SONOBUOY PING!

Click on pic for past Navair pings.

Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.

The Indians have had a carrier for a long time. This will be their third one.

It would be the fourth Indian carrier but the first indigenous vessel.

Aircraft carriers of the type we now know are like battleships towards the end of WWII. Beasts of a prior era, vulnerable to the gnats of the new era.

Would you like to get a second opinion from Adm. Nishimura about our old battleships?

Oh, right, he's not available.

as 11th Commandment said, the US will have naval superiority for the next 50 years at least. If I'm not mistaken the US Navy is right now larger than the next 10 largest navies, combined -- the US Navy alone could take on all the world's navies combined and defeat them easily.

The UK navy is shrinking, the French is stable, the Indian and Chinese are growing but still very small, the Russian is rusting to pieces, the Japanese is still very defence oriented and not directed towards attack and is still small (but large enough to take on the Chinese), as is the S. Korean, Australian and S. African navies. Who else? Oh yes Italy and Germany have small navies

But the rest of the world combined cannot stand up to the US Navy

I would even wager that one naval task force (aircraft carrier, associated ships and submarines) could take on any one NAVY and whip it.

I don't know much about this -- so if not these aircraft carriers, what types are needed?

Also do note that India's "competition" is China, not the US -- the US is waaaaayyyy too technically advanced militarily

Will we be anticipating that this new capability by India will result in them dealing with the Somali pirates?? I still think Somali pirate hunting is a money maker.
