I was outnumbered once by 6 youths to just me and my girl friend. They started coming up fast to attack us. I pulled out a little .25 pistol and pointed it at them. I didn’t even say a word. Just pointed it at them. They stopped in their tracks and ran off the other direction. In the minds of criminals and bullies, they take in the idea it could be their last minute on earth when the confront an armed citizen. And like the cowards they are, self preservation comes into play and they back off. That is why more than 2.5 million times a year armed citizens stop violent crime by just brandishing a gun. But, if you do pull out your gun, you had better be willing to use it. Otherwise you’ll die.

I was jumped by about 30 teens when I was 17. I got hit once, but I refused to hit back and kept walking until they realized I wasn't going to be much sport. I think you have to treat these people like dangerous animals. If you fight back or run, it's like a trigger for them to attack.
