Despite years of great progress in treating AIDS, the number of new infections with the virus that causes it has remained stubbornly around 50,000 a year for a decade in the United States, according to new figures released on Wednesday by federal officials.
The American epidemic is still concentrated primarily in gay men, and is growing rapidly worse among young black gay men. That realization is causing a rift in the AIDS community. Activists say the persistent H.I.V. infection rate proves that government prevention policy is a flop. Federal officials are on the defensive even as they concede that the epidemic will grow if prevention doesn’t get better, which they know is unlikely while their budgets are being cut.

That’s “community” as in “organized group that wants special treatment and your money.”
That is surprising news. I would have thought that providing a treatment that keeps infectious people with a deadly disease vigorous and superficially healthy for longer would increase the rate of spread. If the rate is unchanged, that is in a sense unexpectedly good news (unless the rate would naturally have declined due to saturation, and the treatment is delaying that saturation until we reach a higher total caseload).
Same question, civil rights were suspended to deal with some of the more extreme diseases that spread through America, like the initial Influenza outbreak, TB, Polio, etc. People were often placed in a state of isolation, or public services shut down, to control the spread of the disease.
A direct result of the anti-bullying "it gets better" propaganda pushed on our children.

I think there was an article posted a couple of years ago on this site. If I remember correctly, the article focused on the rise of HIV infection among black women.
Their men came out of prison and infected them.
Someone has to admit that there is just some way in which STD germs are way too contagious (i.s. homosexual male acts). It’s sad that the reckless behavior hasn’t changed enough since the earlier times, and frankly, even more disturbing is the self-destructive path numerous young men, and possibly some women take with the commission of not so good behaviors.
The viruses are such a weird lot.
In all probability, they were the first inhabitants of the planet. They know more and are smarter than the eukaryotes (us). Without them, the Earth would never have been able to sustain life. You would die without them. There are millions of them in your body right now.
The funny thing is that they are dormant(dead) unless they find a host. So, essentially, we need each other.
No cure is going to work if the hosts (those who are carriers) keep placing the virus in a temperature regulated area filled with abundant host cells , because the viruses will adapt to any change in the keycode they use to gain passage into a cell. It is their nature.
