Regulation: Unsupported by science, a beleaguered American economy may soon be subject to ozone standards so stringent that Yellowstone National Park could not meet them. Look forward to double-digit unemployment.
While the nation focused on the debt ceiling and its credit rating, the Environmental Protection Agency, which has become an unelected government unto itself, pondered a new way to impose rules that help explain why this economy cannot grow or create jobs and revenues.
High ozone levels can cause severe regulatory distress, but like other stuff in the atmosphere, there is a relatively safe level that can be obtained.
Then you run into the law of diminishing returns and reach a level beyond which health benefits are nonexistent or illusory, and costs exorbitant and job-killing.
On July 29, the EPA was set to pull the trigger on new regulations mandating a reduction in atmospheric ozone levels from the 75 parts per billion (ppb) established under the Bush administration to as low as 60 ppb. The EPA missed the deadline, but this particular sword still hangs over the neck of the U.S. economy.
The 75 ppb standard was set as a safe level obtainable by existing technology without undue economic damage. But poverty and joblessness can impose their own set of health risks.
Enter the new administration and EPA administrator Lisa Jackson's absurd claims that the Bush standards were "not legally defensible" because they considered the economic impact.
Well, the new EPA levels are not defensible on the basis of health need. According to a study by NERA Economic Consulting, "based on ozone benefits alone, not one of EPA's estimates of the benefits of reducing ozone to a tighter alternative ozone standard is as large as the costs of attaining that respective ozone standard."

When the Endangered Species, Clean Air, and Clean Water Acts were passed 40 years ago, none of those placed anything but the flimsiest restrictions on the EPA and other agencies to justify their decisions.
Chickens are now coming home to roost. Changing these laws to include real science and weigh business costs of compliance should be top priority.
The EPA has to go.

The head of the EPA is a progressive and it’s employees are progressives. They, believing that the end justifies the means, will lie. Just as they have lied before,like about Freon 12.
The EPA banned Freon 12 saying that the Freon molecule would rise into the stratosphere and destroy the ozone layer and was man made and could not be broken down to its constituent parts in nature.
The Freon 12 molecule is thirteen times heaver than air, it can’t rise into the stratosphere but does fall to the ground. where bacteria eat the molecule. The EPA says that Freon 12 will be with us for ever because it’s man made and can’t be broken down by nature. They also say that it floats up to the stratosphere (remember 13 times heavier) where sun light breaks it down and chlorine, apart of the Freon 12 molecule, then destroys the ozone.
It’s heavier than air so it can’t get up there. It can’t be broken down but sunlight breaks it down. it’s man made so we will be stuck with it forever but bacteria in the soil eats it. One lie after another.
Now let’s examine why Freon 12 was banned. The DuPont patent was about to expire. Freon 12 is cheap and easy to make. DuPont would no longer have a monopoly. DuPont had a replacement ready still under patent. Some one at the EPA took money to ban Freon 12.
When it comes to air quality, every time a goal is reached or it appears it might be reached, The EPA moves the goal posts. There have been instances where the EPA has cited industry for pollution when it was the environment doing the polluting, pine trees release into the environment turpentine vapor, especially in hot weather.
The EPA will lie at the drop of a hat. Lets examine another one. Dioxin is a man made chemical that is not found in nature and never goes away and does not break down. The level of Dioxin allowed by the EPA is less than the amount found in a garden vegetable eaten by nearly every one. That vegetable makes Dioxin on its own without mans help and breaks down just fine in the environment. That vegetable is the tomato.
Do we need to mention DDT? Rachel Carson should be tried in absentia for mass murder.
Amen to that! They are ruining our standard of living and making us all poorer. They won’t be happy until we are all living in cold caves, walking everywhere, and beating our clothes on river rocks to get them clean.
It is pretty clear, they don’t give a rip and they only feel important when they are wielding their regulatory power.
Congress should take this as a lesson, you create a department, you will never get rid of it and it will just keep expanding into a monster.
