YAKIMA, Wash. A known gang member was shot by police after opening fire on officers with an AR-15 rifle following a pursuit from Toppenish to Yakima on Wednesday night, authorities said.
No officers were injured in the exchange of gunfire on E Street east of Fourth Street about 10 p.m., Yakima police Lt. Mike Merryman said at the scene.
The man, who has ties to the Yakima area and a history of violent felony convictions, was suspected of stealing a white Ford Crown Victoria from Legends Casino earlier this week, Merryman said.
Officers across the county had been warned Wednesday that he was believed to be carrying a semiautomatic rifle with him. Merryman said it was that same type of gun with which the suspect fired on the officers through the back window of the car.
The suspect had stopped, for an unknown reason, on E Street. At least three Yakima officers returned fire, Merryman said.
The pursuit started in the Toppenish area. Merryman said he did not yet have details on how the suspect was found or which agency initially led the pursuit.
The suspect, whose name was not immediately confirmed by police, was taken to a local hospital for treatment, Merryman said. Officers had to grab the rifle from him because he would not obey commands once they had him at gunpoint, Merryman said.
Merryman said the suspect was moving at the scene, but information about the extent of his injuries was not immediately available late Wednesday.
Police have scheduled a press conference for this afternoon.
This means its either one of those darned Lutheran kids from Minnesoata or Amish kids from Pennsylvania.
Yup, name ending in ‘ez...for those darned Lutherans, or -mmmed for those darned Amish.
Just the new Democrap, Diversity is wonderful, voters.
The Yakima Herald is always wary of upsetting all the other Lutheran and Amish kids.
Dad and I were born there.
Dad died there a couple years ago.
Gotta believe a gang banger w an AR-15, stealing a white Crown Vic, had visions of impersonating a cop.
Suspect probably has two last names ending in “ez”. Don’t blame the Amish. He could be a Mennonite.
Yakima County has approximately 60 gangs operating with membership close to 2,500. The Nortenos and Surenos make up the majority of Yakima’s gang membership, and are responsible for several violent crimes each year.
Most of these gangs also operate over hear on my side of the Cascades.
Here is a list of some of the known Yakima gangs.

Soon the gangs will feel confident enough to take on the police just like Mexico. The police will face beheadings, being shot with their families, mutilated by machete attacks, acid, bombs. The ongoing conquest may turn ugly.
I don't see any problem in the story other than how did a convicted felon violate the law (again proving gun control laws don't work to keep guns out of the hands of criminals)by possessing a firearm counter to state and federal laws.
That author isn't sure anything happened at all!
Maybe he didn’t comprende the law. Let him go.
