Not a bad thought- except that if you are close enough to smite the enemy with melee weapons, you are also close enough to be pulled down and destroyed by them. Firearms allow you to keep the enemy further away, which in this case enables escape, which if a horde comes upon you in a public place, is the better course of action. Besides, if you intend to cut through a mob with cold steel, you would be better off using one of these:
