Guess the ‘joke’ is on you, Sergeant
By Howie Carr
Sunday, August 7, 2011

BOSTON HERALD

Cops don’t expect to get arrested for drunken driving. Neither do state reps. A cop who has 30 years on the job and four years in the Legislature never, ever figures he’s getting lugged.

Just ask Sgt. Mark Preston of the Seabrook, N.H., police, who is charged with ingesting a bad ice cube a week ago at Salisbury Beach.

According to the police report quoted in the New Hampshire Union Leader, Preston’s response to his arrest was to launch a filibuster, just like he was back in the N.H. House of Representatives.

“What about the brotherhood? This is (bleep). Why aren’t you taking me home?”

Did I mention his party affiliation? Democrat.

The Salisbury cops had no choice but to arrest ex-Rep. Preston, because he’d allegedly slammed into a parked Kia that then skidded into two other cars.

But the police didn’t have to humiliate their “brother” by quoting him at such length. Then they filed their reports at the courthouse in Newburyport, giving reporters even easier access to them.

After slamming into the parked car, Preston took it on the lam. He abandoned his Jeep Cherokee and started hoofing it back to New Hampshire, a few hundred yards north. When they caught up with the lamster, the Salisbury cops showed him no respect.

“If this happened in Seabrook, we would take care of you guys! This is ridiculous,” Preston is quoted as saying in the police report. “You guys are a (bleeping) joke! I am a 30-year sergeant and you are going to do this to me? Really! My life and career are over! I hope you guys are (bleepin’) happy!”

The Democrat statesman went into another tirade as soon as the cell door clanged behind him.

“You’re not putting me in a cell, right? I am not going into a cell. This is how you treat a cop?” the report reads.

Then, according to the police report, he started in with the threats.

“This is not what would happen in Seabrook if this was you guys. We would take care of you! You’ll see. I will make sure we return the favor to you. You better watch out when you drive through Seabrook. You guys speed!”

Actually, the Salisbury police did him a favor. The town’s former police chief is due back in court in Lynn tomorrow, charged with four counts of larceny. He got $44,685 in so-called unused vacation time as he was forced out last winter.

Bottom line, the local constabulary isn’t too popular in Salisbury these days.

A crowd quickly gathered near the accident scene and, according to the report, “Over 100 people, most of them angry and irate, began to yell how Salisbury police were corrupt.”

Sgt. Preston is due back in court Aug. 22. He could not be reached for comment. I guess he got it all off his chest last Sunday night.

Something has been very off about Howie’s sahow lately. Too many idiot callers, too many ‘soft’ subjects that are just boring.

At first I thought it was just Sandy being off on her honeymoon—I find her extremely irritating but she’s a good producer—but it’s been just as bad since she came back.

Howie going on about beautiful people while he has hair tansplants, liposuction, and is lobbing softball after softball to Scott Brown so he can get his daughter a job with him—he sure ain’t a man of the people anymore.

I miss Jerry Williams.
