...The nation's longest-serving governor noted that this "loving and personal God desires not a show of religion but a deep connection with our innermost being. His agenda is not a political agenda. His agenda is a salvation agenda."
God, he said, is wise enough not to be affiliated with any political party.
[Rick] Perry read three passages of Scripture: from Joel 2, Isaiah 40 ("They'll soar on wings like eagles"), and Ephesians 3. He closed his morning remarks with a prayer.
"Father, our heart breaks for America," Perry prayed. "We see discord at home, we see fear in the marketplace, we see anger in the halls of government. And as a nation, we have forgotten who made us, who protects us, who blesses us. And for that we cry out for your forgiveness."
Perry also prayed for President Barack Obama, "that you would impart your wisdom upon him, that you would guard his family."
.......Barry W. Lynn, an ordained United Church of Christ minister and executive director of Citizens United for Separation of Church and State, was inside the stadium. He said he believed Perry was trying to "out-Jesus" Michelle Bachmann and Newt Gingrich, two declared candidates who are making overtures to the religious right.
"Governor Perry achieved his goal today," Lynn said. "He drove almost every major religious right leader and group into his corral......"
........Except for the participation of prominent pastors and politicians - including Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback, who read the Beatitudes - the seven-hour event resembled nothing more than a boisterous Sunday-morning worship service at evangelical churches across the nation. The prayers were long and heartfelt, the remarks earnest, and the music - gospel and Christian rock - inspired rapturous frenzies of arm-waving, swaying and singing along.

You were there?...or repeating media reports?
Atypical Texas Democrat in the eighties was pretty conservative compared to the rest of the country...remember Reagan and John Connelly were also ex dems. RP is not the perfect conservative by any means but he is far better than Mitt Romney,Huntsman,Pallenty ect.
Are you some kind of idiot? What’s not to understand about what he posted?
Rick Perry leading it?......it has not been that many years since I wholeheartedly believed another Texan (running for President) was devotedly for Christ....
...only to have my heart broken by his deception.
God can't be fooled....only us mortals.
I understood him perfectly.
...If we disagree with Perry or his message....we are considered by you (and others) as hate filled.
..when some of you push hard for your candidate and some of us push back....your grab for the golden ring of 'Reagan wasn't perfect either, blah blah'....
Nice way to respond to a fellow FReeper.
I don’t know why I’d think people would be civil to each other around here.
Just people coming to a thread about faith and prayer to change the positive tone. That’s about the size of it.

“You, and the hate-filled religious Left, agree.”
“You coulda been standing outside with the despicable Barry Lynn and his crew.”
You know what? I am getting pretty sick of you putting words in my mouth and insulting me for stating facts. Rick Perry is a POLITICIAN! You don’t stop being Rick Perry, POLITICIAN no matter what forum you appear in. It’s like saying you are only half pregnant. You just cannot separate the two. THAT is the point, the ONLY point that I made. I didn’t even criticize him for it. But don’t tell me it wasn’t political because you are only lying to yourself. Stop with the insults. I am the least of Perry’s worries.

“Amazing - why do you detest the man?”
And you decided that all by yourself, did ya? In fact, I admire that he stood up for those values he espouses, and didn’t let anyone back him down.

“You were there?...or repeating media reports?”
I didn’t read the media reports, lonestar. I have a mind of my own. And I wasn’t criticizing Perry’s religion nor his stance. All I am saying is to be honest. It was a religious political rally and that is what it was no matter what glasses you are seeing through...and you make it even more obvious by citing the POLITICAL opposition to it.
You guys need to grow a hide.
..but to me, it is obvious this is a thread about Rick Perry for President
.. it becomes political, with name calling & insults....
...and there you have our nation in a microcosm
And apparently you think you have an ability to read the minds of others.
For gosh sakes, name somebody who is running for POTUS who ISN'T a POLITICIAN!
Rationalization out the window! Anybody who wants to be POTUS is a POLITICIAN!
No kidding! Point made. Every headline, every radio and TV news that I am just now looking at is calling this “GOVERNOR PERRY’S PRAYER RALLY.”
Hello?
If Sarah doesn’t run, I’d vote for Perry.
AND, BTW, I didn’t say it was a bad thing. In fact, yesterday, on “The Response, Prayers for a Nation in Crisis” thread, I posted a prayer of my own. Don’t judge me. You don’t know me well enough to judge me.
At least you admit you are swayed by the headlines!
NO I WASN’T. I started posting at 5 AM. I hadn’t even SEEN the headlines until a few minutes ago. Knock it off,
If it was Sarah Palin, I would have said exactly the same thing, or bachmann, or any other politician.
Exactly the same words I use. I may not have been a strong Dem, the first President I voted for was Eisenhower. After about 20 years the Dems left me and I remained a conservative independent. In 2010 I registered Rep because there were 2-3 candidates in the primary I wanted to vote for.
Just getting him to say it. By the way, you are an idiot for reacting in such a way.
Aren’t we sensitive! We can dish it out but we can’t take it! /s
