Sacramento, Calif. (AP) --

The estimated cost of California's high-speed rail project is rising by billions of dollars.

Environmental impact studies released Tuesday and obtained in advance by The Associated Press put the cost of building the initial segment at anywhere from $10 billion to $13.9 billion.

That's sharply higher than the $7.1 billion estimate from 2009 for the Merced-to-Bakersfield section. Rail board executives say the higher costs include more elevated tracks in the Central Valley and more specific data about property values.

Construction is scheduled to start next year.

Liberals love mass transit - even when it make absolutely no sense. My guess? Big up front money from Washington for a system Calif can’t afford to maintain. Fools.

yes, but liberals almost never use mass transit.

that’s for po’ folks and they hope to destroy the middle class, thereby reducing them to po’ folks dependent upon the state.

Merced to Bakersfield-The Mexican Farm Workers Express. And of course they will get free passes with feeder bus service right to the fields.

The thing that amazes me is that every single one of these projects has costs that far exceed estimates, yet the estimates come in low over and over and over again. Its as if they never learn.

...yet the estimates come in low over and over and over again. Its as if they never learn.

They know exactly how much it cost. If they gave real numbers, no one would want it. That is why these low ball phoney numbers are always used.

If this thing does go through to completion there is not a chance it will cost a dime less than $30 billion.

Its as if they never learn.

They have learned. They know that they can sell a project for X billion dollars. Once they have spent 1/2X, they note that it is going to be 1.25X, "but we have spent too much to quit now." Then, after .75X is spent, they scale up to 1.5 to 2X.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Can you imagine what’s going to happen when one of these high speed rail trains has a wreck? Traveling at 100mph and having a wreck will kill everyone on the train. That’s of course if anyone rides it. Now look at which politicians stand to gain by putting this system in.

Oh they’ve learned. They’ve learned that they need to lie about the cost to gain public approval. Until the elected officials who accept and propagate these lies start being tarred and feathered it will continue.

Its as if it is SOP so that the project get accepted/passed from the start.

There are rules and there is the way it is.

The only financially successful high speed rail is in Japan. High population density and a concentration of destination targets. It would NOT work here - and likely would cost a fortune to maintain.

The only good thing about high speed rail is that it makes liberals feel good about themselves.
