LONDON – What, you might wonder, is the modern urban guerilla’s rioting weapon of choice? A machete? You might think so. But for most of the youngsters looting and ransacking the streets of London for the past three nights, cement blocks, iron bars and supermarket trolleys seemed to do the job of smashing in shop windows just as well.
A balaclava? Perhaps. Per the multiple videos posted on Twitter and footage aired on British news networks through the night, some sort of facial covering appeared to be an essential style accessory.
But when it comes to the single item that the modern would-be looter simply can’t do without, the answer, somewhat surprisingly, is a Blackberry.

During the Watts riots in California the media covered them. The police learned that if they shut down the media, the riots would stop. They shut down the media. Seems like they would learn.

You are not sophisticated or you would have shut this down already. Blaming things on communication devices is silly. From all reports, there is no police presence in these hot spots. There has to be a few soldiers left in your crumbling military to dispatch to put a stop to this.
Sure, shut Blackberry service for everyone, rather than fire plastic bullets (much less real ones) at the relatively small number of thugs committing the violence.
What I don’t get is .. if these ‘youth’ are so poor, despondent, hopeless, jobless, yada yada yada .. how can afford not only the Blackberries but the monthly service charge (in US it’s @ $30/mo just for the data package on top of the basic wireless rates)?
IOW, we need for Big Brother to snoop on communications to prevent crime.

Obviously those "yobs" (rioters) don't have much of an ability to contribute, so they don't need to work. On the other hand, they have a few needs that the society must satisfy.
I guess the Cold War with USSR was much easier - the enemy was distant and well marked. Now you have Communists in charge of major countries of the West.

Let BB alone and and demonstrate how the oldest democracy without written Constitution deal with social issues. Roll tanks on the streets, Chicom style. Fire on protesters, Syrian style.
