UK: Statistics Show One Adoption for Every 2,235 Abortions

Figures from the Planned Parenthood abortion business in the U.S. show it facilitates very few adoptions compared with the number of abortions it does when pregnant women visit for assistance.

Knowing that, Peter Saunders, the CEO of the Christian Medical Fellowship, a UK-based organization with 4,500 UK doctors and 1,000 medical students as members, and the director of the anti-euthanasia group Care Not Killing Alliance, wanted to know if the same sort of abortion versus adoption disparity was present in the United Kingdom. His survey found a shocking comparison.

“All of which made me wonder what the comparative figures are like in the UK,” he writes on his blog. “Well in 2009 there were 203,444 abortions on UK residents and just 91 adoptions involving babies under one year.”

“That’s a ratio of 2,235 abortions performed for every baby adopted,” he explained. “Or in other words, a ratio almost seven times worse than even the US – which is perhaps why Britain’s new adoption czar says it might be a good idea for women with unwanted pregnancies to consider giving their babies up for adoption.”

The abortion-adoption comparison in the United States is enough to prompt many pro-life advocates to push for revoking taxpayer funding for the abortion business.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America posted on its website what it calls its service numbers for 2009. This document, dated February 2011, shows Planned Parenthood affiliates nationwide did 332,278 surgical abortions or abortions using the dangerous RU 486 abortion during in 2009.

The document the abortion organization posted shows Planned Parenthood provided prenatal services to merely 7,021 women and referred only 977 women for adoption services. These numbers were a 25 percent drop in prenatal care clients and a whopping 59 percent decline in adoption referrals from the 2,405 adoption referrals in 2008. The abortion business helped only 9,433 prenatal clients in 2008, down substantially from the 11,000 women it provided prenatal care to in 2007 — showing health care given to pregnant woman has fallen substantially over the years.

As a result, 97.6 percent of pregnant women going to Planned Parenthood are sold abortions while less than 2.4 percent of pregnant women received non-abortion services including adoption and prenatal care. That’s up from 96.5 percent of pregnant women going to Planned Parenthood getting abortions in 2008.

This just demonstrates that the left only cares about killing babies.

True.

However, just to be a bore about statistics, the figures discussed do not tell us the ratio of abortions to adoptions in the United States. There are many other abortion facilities, other than Planned Parenthood, and many other organizations that arrange adoptions.

It would be interesting (or perhaps horrifying) to have accurate figures.

From everything I've read (and I've been researching it quite a bit the past couple of months) well over 90% of adoptions in America (aside from foster care adoptions and people adopting children from a spouse's previous marriage) are of children from overseas. There are only a couple thousand adoptions of American babies per year.

I was looking into the numbers on this a few months ago. As I recall US gubmint studies show that in 1973 7% of pregnant, unmarried white women placed their baby for adoption. In 1999 that number was .07%.

There are approximately 1.3 MILLION American babies aborted each year, there are families who are willing to adopt EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM.

Why should they put up their babies for adoption?

There’s no stigma attached to unwed births any more, in fact it’s now “hip” and glorified and the taxpayers subsidize their irresponsibility.

Unmarried women of all races want to get pregnant so they get more welfare!

I was looking into that issue also (sorry, my other comment was in response to Tax-chick but I hit the wrong button) and I think that the numbers of domestic and international adoptions (not including step parent and foster care) were closer than that, maybe about even.
I do recall seeing a graph showing that international adoption peaked about 4 years ago and have been dropping since.

You may be right; however, domestic adoptions have not been increasing, foreign adoptions have been dropping (it is much more difficult to adopt from China, India and Russia than it was a few years ago and several other countries like Vietnam have closed their programs).

My diocesan Catholic Charities is ending their international adoption program this year, except for a handful of families with adoptions pending. It is growing more difficult.

That’s good, if it means children are finding permanent homes in their countries of origin, but it doesn’t help the babies in the United States who are either aborted or living with unmarried, and often incapable, mothers.

Why anyone would want to rear children without a spouse is beyond me. I’d like to have my husband and a full professional staff!

When my single mom secretary gets a call at our adoption agency from a single woman who wants to adopt it is all she can do to not scream “Are you out of your mind!”

I understand. I know a number of single mothers, and it’s not, in my opinion, something one should choose deliberately.
